I like Olive Garden as much as I like McDonalds for a hamburger or fries. I don't need authentic. As long as it tastes good, I'm there. Olive Garden's Chicken Alfredo is one of the best - and that's my guage for a lot of restaurants. Believe it or not, Red Lobster has a good one too (I don't eat seafood).

All those who hate the "commercialized" stuff just because it's not mom & pop's local discovery need to stick it.

And no, if they charge me tip on a take out like that, I'm going back and taking names.

IF you are really concerned call up the resturant. they should have a copy of the reciept also call up the CC and find out if they really did charge.

I don't care whether its commercialized or not. Olive Garden has terrible microwaved crap/food. Red Lobster is even worse. As far as the "commercialized" places go, I don't mind Chili's. I don't think I like any of them else. People like Olive Garden / Red Lobster because it gives them the feeling that they are eating at a nice place, when they are really eating cheap food. Gourmet for poor people.

Ok, let's just stop with the generalizations. After reading what I said, do you think I eat there because I like the atmosphere and because it's cheap ?

You must be a food critic to be able to tell the food comes out of a microwave. That's the dumbest thing I've heard anyone actually believe.

Well, I'm fukkin hungry so I whip out my CC and pay, but don't leave a tip. I get home and check my online statement, and they added %15 gratuity to my bill. This was take out so who the hell gets it? Do they have the right to charge me for a tip despite the fact that I chose not to leave one?

htey do not have the Right to do that. contact he CC and complaing.

call the resturant and complaing. try to get the regional manager if possible. Call the police for CC fraud.

I had Ruby tuesday's do something like this to me. the waitress was crap. I paid with my Debit card and puta 0 in the tip section. my wife checked the account at night and found they added a tip. we called ruby tuesdays and got it fixed plus like $75 in gift cards.

just call and raise heck.

How did you get the $75 gift card ?? Did you ask them if so how?

I never understood how to ask for free stuff to make up for their mistake.

The Olive Garden here is like a retirement home. I kid you not -- you walk in and NO ONE there except the staff is under 60. I tell my friends that before I bring them there and they break down laughing when they see that I'm telling the truth.

That aside, their food is OKAY. Not terrible, but not great. It's cheap and they have drinkable wine. Plus the $7 all you can eat soup and salad deal kicks ass and is the only think I'll order there.

Good, so what you've been saying has no validity.

Tip is for service provided during a meal not for cooking the food.
Unless with cases like amnesiac said, but 15% would be alittle much I would think.
Then again, do take out people get waiter/waitress wages?

However I used to work at a nice restaurant, and if you didn't get a tip
or in most cases the bartender didn't feel you gave enough, they'd write
their own tip. Not to say its right, but when I worked there you got good
service, and the owner actually stopped people more than once, calling them
out on the bad tip.

I know one bartender who was notorious for it. Had a group of guys once charge
250 in bar bills not to mention were are the bar for 3-4 hours. left a 1 dollar tip.
That was quickly changed to 100. No one ever commented about it. Not to say
this is right, but giving 1 dollar on a 250 dollar bill isnt' either. Especially when you
get good service.

However this is a case of take out, so I would probably confront the restarant before anything else.
Talk to a manager.

That bartender is a tosser. I'd be p!ssed. Sure I spent $250 at the dam bar. You made your money. It isn't as if you did much. You got your pay, your company got their profit through charging me for my drinks. $100 would out right p!ss me off. Stealing fock.

Your saying "not saying it's right". I'm saying it is wrong and stealing.

Oh, and, I keep seeing people claiming the "they ran the card through for more than the amount to make sure the amount of the tip would be there" - I for the life of me can't figure out wtf reason anyone would have to do that. In any restaurant I've been to, they give you the total, with a line for the tip *before* I hand them my credit/debit card. I don't know why they wouldn't know your intention for the amount of the tip before they ring it up.

Really? At every restaurant that I've been to, they take my card, come back with a credit-card receipt, where I write in the tip and then leave.

Easy i called in and asked to talk to a manager. He apologized and was nice but i asked for the regional boss's number (wasnt geting anywhere with the local guy) i called him and told him what happened he said come into the resturant for dinner and to talk about it. while talking i made sure i was a little loud complaining about them commiting CC fraud. After dinner he gave us the Card and paid for the dinner we had.

oh and i got the $5 back heh

While I agree with you on most things; I can certainly tell if food/burger/pasta/most things are microwaved or not. I personally don't own a microwave, only a toaster oven, due to that..

Uh..yeah. Anyone with half a brain can tell if food has been microwaved or not. Try microwaving a steak, and see how it comes out. Are you that dense?

What you're saying is Olive Garden microwaves their food and the waiters/waitresses bring it out ... riiiiiiiiight.

I don't know what kinda service you get there in Kansas... but it sure ain't like that over here.

What's not microwaved is just reconstituted and reheated.
Anyone who thinks that the food at The Olive Garden is not awful has never tasted Italian food made by real Italian people. I guess it's something I take for granted with my heritage and the area I live (grew up in south jersey, currently living in a place that I once remarked feels like home becuase the whole place is very....Italian).

I can't believe you're actually defending it!

I used to joke that the Olive Garden on City Line Ave. in Bala Cynwyd PA was in a shootout with TGIF, Houlihan's and Chili's on the same street to see who could provide the slowest service.

Chill out man. They did not charge your card the full amount yet. What a LOT of restaurants do is "reserve" a certain amount of funds on your card, just to make sure the funds are there. If the funds are there, then the charge goes through. It happens like this:
  • You get there, the bill is $10.00 (just to make the math easy to follow)
  • You give them your card, they run it through, and ask your CC company for approval for $11.50 (assuming that you are gonna give 15% tip).
  • Your CC says "Yes, he has $11.50 available, we authorize that amount" and the CC company puts a HOLD on that amount.
  • Waitress gives you the check, it says $10, with a blank spot for tip.
  • If you choose, you may tip. In your case, you did not.
  • At the end of night, when the restayrant runs through all of their charges, they will run your through, remove the hold for $11.50, and make the actual charge for $10.

No big deal. Check it agin tomorrow or next day. It will resolve itself.
FJ
Exactly. It is common practice to ask for more. That is why your CC calls these TEMPORARY transactions. Wait a few days and check back. If it still has the tip added, then start your complaint calls. Here was the first of thousands of websites that appeared in my Google search - all of which describe the temporary tip which will later be removed.
Because this is a restaurant, the credit card processors add an additional 20% to the "temporary authorization". This additional percentage is to allow for a tip to be added to your purchase. Manuel's does not add this additional percentage, it is the policy of your credit card processors.

Oh God not another "authentic" defense. Ever have authentic chinese ? Think any take-out or even sit-down chinese restaurant has really good food ? Don't even get me started on that one. It's not about authentic. It's about how it tastes and whether that is acceptable or not. I don't go there asking for authentic Italian. I go there for some good Alfredo. And of course there's no doubt some of the food is reheated. But that's a far cry from being microwaved from frozen.

Talk to a manager.

This is sooooo fricken ilegal. If the person who's card that was wanted to make a stink about it, your friend would be in jail. No passing go, no collecting $200. that is stealing, credit card fraud and God only knows what else. I have had ppl that work for me in Restaurants fired on the spot for that, without even having the card holder complain. Your friend is very lucky.

As for the OP... if you are concerned about it, then just call the rest. and ask to speak to the manager. Explain the situation to him.. how you did not have a lot of cash, ordered a lunch portion and they told you it was fine until you got there. Ask him about the gratuity. I am sure he will not get mad at your call. Don't be mean, just tell him you are concerned about what happened and you want to a) make sure there are no unauthorized charges on your card and b) request that the ppl who take orders on the phone be a bit more informed and tell ppl what they can and cannot order when they call.

🙂

Well, you might know chinese, and i'm not about to argue you on that one, but you certainly don't know italian, authentic or not.
