So one of my co-workers and I went drinking tonight. He explained his opinion on a bunch of things, and I want to know how accurate the idea is. He basically said that the human race is completely messed up because of things that happened 200+ years ago, and there's no going back. The only way that we could go back is if we slowly phase out government entirely. Meaning absolutely no government whatsoever - the people run themselves.

As others have pointed out, that's known as anarchy.

All your friend has proven is that he'd been drinking or was otherwise intellectually impared. If you have any doubts about that, it's a good thing you have the excuse that you were drinking, too. :hmm:

Anarcho-capitalism would work. In the few places it's been tried it has worked. It happens so rarely though, because people either want control of other people, or because they want to rely on someone else.

As for the middle ages in Europe, there was a government--it was the papacy, and it was no anarchy.

A society in which everything is privatized would work fine. If someone or a community so desires a murderer be punished, then they'll pay to have the murderer punished.

I'm sick of our socialized justice systems.

I might add, think about how much democracy/autocracy/oligarchy/totalitarianism/monarchy/papcy etc. has failed us--too many times to count. Then think about how many times anarchy has failed--none.

great point you bring up there. What are your examples of anarchy working?

The same way pure communism hasn't ever failed - because it's an impossible utopian ideal. And by "ideal" I mean infantile fantasy based on willful denial of human nature.

The only way that we could go back is if we slowly phase out government entirely. Meaning absolutely no government whatsoever - the people run themselves. Everyone would own a gun, or if they didn't, they just need to be careful about the situations they put themselves into. Murderers would be gunned down by other people affected by their actions. There would be no taxes. Currency would be in gold. Roads would be privatized, and if there were tolls, it would be because the company running them used that to make money. Large companies would grow larger, until they were a monopoly, and then someone new would come in and compete, and the cycle would restart.

Does this make any sense whatsoever? Would something like this work?

With a global population of 6+billion people, I can say with absolute certainty that the opinions of your co-worker is FUBAR.
