Question about the XP-M 2400 and multipliers/FSB

Hello,

I'm just about to install this CPU on my Shuttle "AN35N-Ultra". I have read that the CPU speed is going to be a lot less than stock speeds when installed( I've read some forums that it could be as low as 6 x 100=600MHz ). My question is what should the default multipler and FSB settings be? Also, can I start OCing right away, or should I allow a proper burn in period?

I have the exact same chip and board. I know the stock FSB is supposed to be 133 MHz, but I forget what the multiplier is (or the stock clockspeed, for that matter).
 
the usual FSB is 166 i believe. since mobiles are locked to a 12.5x multiplier (i *believe*), to get anything over ~1.66ghz, you'd have to bump it from a 133mhz FSB to a 166mhz, but my knowledge on the subject isn't much, only had my xp-m a day or so, but they are very overclockable. my o/c, thus far, 283mhz, from 1.8ghz, seems to be limited only by the locked multiplier (which can be unlocked by closing the L1 bridges, or something like that, just google multiplier unlocking athlon xp mobile) and it runs 35c full load under prime95 with the stock athlon xp hsf and arctic silver 5.

in short, you might something like 11.0x166, but don't take my word for it (but if your mobile can't do those settings, something is wrong anyways 😛)

forgot to add, can't speak about using a 200mhz fsb either, only have one stick of pc3200, and 512mb is definitely not enough for me ^^
 
That's interesting, because mobiles are actually completely unlocked without any modification. The FSB on Newegg is listed as 266, which equates to 133MHz since it's a DDR bus. I'll dig around for info from AMD, though.
 
my mobile is definitely locked at 12.5x(not locked to it, but locked from going any higher), and googling has confirmed (to an extent) that most xp's are locked into this multiplier cap without modifying the L1 bridges. i do, however, have an epox 8RDA3I which doesn't let me change the fsb to anything *BUT* 133/166/200 (maybe it's just a mobile chip thing, not sure) so maybe the motherboard just won't let me go over 12.5x, but my problems coincide with the articles i found about unlocking athlon xps from the 1.25x multiplier, will be interesting to see what you find.
 
The only thing limiting you to <12.5x is your mobo, which you could bypass by cutting some bridges. I've set mine as high as 22 before, for kicks and giggles (22x100 =o)

It'll probably default to 100x6, but that doesn't matter. Put it to 200x11 @ 1.65v right off the bat. That should run no problem, and it should install windows fairly quick. Later you can back off the voltage or up the fsb/multiplier more if you feel so inclined.
 
Thanks for everyones input, I really do appreciate it. Right now, I'm loading Windows XP Pro @ 9 x 133=1200Mhz. After I have XP loaded, I will load the mobo drivers and increase the multiplier x FSB slowly to the desired MHz. I do plan to OC. I seated my Zalman 7000 ALCU, so I'm ready to go.

Why such a low multiplier? That mobile can go much, much, much higher than that without a hiccup. 🙂

Actually, the mobile Bartons all are designed to run at the 133 (266) FSB and not at 166 (333). I'm not sure exactly why but it probably has to do with the lower default voltage of the chips and also to minimize the amount of heat produced. Doesn't matter anyway, as we all know they run fine at 200 FSB. 🙂
 
What ram are you using in this new setup? Like Blue Weasel said 200fsb should be no sweat as long as the rest of your hardware is up to it. I like my shuttle it does 233fsb with a sempron or my mobile 2400 no problem. The only thing I didn't like was the top speed on my mobile was 2400mhz. My Abit NF-7 can take the same chip close to 2600mhz.

Let us know how it does, I'm kinda curious how high it will take your chip and how high the fsb will go.

I have Geil 512MB 3200 value CL2.5(the one with the blue heatspreader). I have the dividers set at 1:1. Right now, I have Prime95 running. My CPU speed is at 2GHz. I'll let it run for a couple of more hours and then increase the FSB again.

btw, I have my mobile set at 12.5x160.

Now set at 12.5x170 close to 3200+ speeds. I have been running Prime95 for a couple of hours and no errors as of yet. I will run it overnight and see how it does. Temps while running Prime95 are at 36c @ 1.568 vcore.
 
You might as well just kick the bus speed up to 200 and work from there, say 200x11 or 12 you should be fine with 1.75v just keep an eye on your temps.

Just out of curiousity Toro, what torture test do you run on Prime95? Thanks!

 
I use the "Blend" option but lately prime isn't working right for me it runs but it will not put my cpu on a full load. I wound up running Folding at home, Super PI and Tribes vengeance for stress test. I'm looking for an older version of prime maybe that will work.
 
I had mine at 200*12.5 at 1.7 or 1.8 VCore with pretty decent temps... I felt like upping the FSB though so I am now running 220 *11 and although I am running a slower clock, I have a faster computer... to give you an idea I could do 2M superPi in 104 secs at 2.5 GHz but I can do it in 99 secs at 2420.... if I bombing run the FSB and put it to 225 and drop the multi (my board stops at 225 whcih is fine since my chip can't handle that FSB with a good multi) I can do 2M digits in 93 secs or so... so the FSB is very important and the multi not quite as much... at least that is what I have found
 
Do you think I should manually bump up my VCore to say 1.65, or should I just leave in "AUTO" setting? When I leave at in AUTO setting, CPU-Z records the VCore at under 1.60 at 2.316GHz.
