Question about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial

I'm writing a paper about, among other issues surrounding the dedication of the memorial, the aesthetic properties of it. For those who have been to see it on the Mall, just a quick question:

Does the Vietnam Veterans Memorial taper into the ground (i.e. does it seem to sink into the ground), or does the ground slope upwards towards the edges of the memorial, thus making it seem that the memorial maintains its same height, but the ground rises up to envelop the wall?

Thanks...and if you need clarification, just PM or reply in the thread.

I've been there. The memorial stays at the same "height" and the ground slopes up. Thus the wall gets shorter as you go out from the corner.

I've been to see the Memorial, but I can't really answer your question. It was a long time ago, and I wouldn't have noticed that detail.

Thank you. I lived in Baltimore until I was four and was in D.C. many times, but I can't remember any of it. I desperately want to go back there by myself and spend all the time I have on the Mall. It's a place that holds a lot of personal importance for me. It seems like an almost unreal place, or at least I regard it that way in my mind. I know it's not where this country was born, but it certainly acts as the birthplace and final resting place for many of this country's bravest men and women.

My class went to DC as a senior trip in high school about 5 years ago (good god I'm old). The wall is definitely a place with a lot of meaning. The other memorial that gets overlooked a lot is the Korean war one. You should be sure to visit that one if you get the chance.

We learned about the Korean War memorial in my history class this semester. The structure of that monument really interests me too...instead of a combat situation, it's soldiers on a patrol. Though I've seen it, it seems to me, like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, to be muted, but extremely powerful.
