question about the sockets

i am looking to get a new computer, and while doing my search i am seeing socket 754, 939, 940 etc. can someone tell me the difference in the types of sockets that are available?

thx

940 will soon become 939, the 939 will not work in a 940 pin socket...these are the fx-51 or opteron chips while the 754 socket are the normal amd 64's, which will become 939 pin also supporting dual channel.

basicly 939 isn't out yet. It will replace both 940 and 754. 754 is for the med end a64 processors. 940 is for the high end fx processors and opterons. If you plan on getting a new processor before your mobos also out of date you probably will want to wait for 939. Otherwise just get which ever one supports the processor that's in your price range.

oh, ok. i see now. so basically, the higher end chips are going to be on the "higher number" sockets, correct? and my second question is concerning the different "bridges"? once again, what are the differences.
