question about the show "COPS"

I always watch COPS and just wanted to know the people who make the show do they have to have the suspect sign a waiver to allow them to be on. I know other reality shows like Scare Tactics or The Hidden Camera Show need a waiver to allow the person to be shown on tv.

If you are in public, you are public domain and are at the will of the press. No permission is needed in either case. A lot of times they get permission just so the person doesn't try to press charges.

it makes me wonder if the PD's get any payola or kickbacks to use footage on that show.
same with the RealTV shows, where there will be a dashcam of a suspect fleeing or something.
Surely the police departments just dont hand that over to those shows for free.

Sometimes on cops the suspects faces are blurred I thought. Or other folks faces are blurred out?

Yeah, sometimes faces are blurred and sometimes not. I'm not sure why.

your right about the face blurring part

I remember one episode where a guy in his mid 20's picked up a street walker; after the guy was pulled over they asked the street walker a few questions and they found out that it was really a guy in drag. The P.O. was sayin to the guy your lucky I pulled you over or you would have done something you would have really regretted, i wonder why he didnt request his face to be blurred. That was one of the funniest episodes ive seen

I'm guessing they are asked after the incident has been taped. If they ok to release it or air it, then it gets included as is. If they say no, then maybe that's when they get blurred out.

I think they used to blur faces of suspects, but now they just blur faces of innocent bystanders that didn't sign waiver or minors.

IIRC the people who has their face blurred out hasn't gone to trial yet or something along those lines. The people who do not have their faces blurred went to trial and was convicted. This is what I was told many moons ago. I probably am very wrong though.
