hey guys. Im just wondering, as technology is going now, What year do you think it will be when they have processors of 1THz(1,000 GHz) or more for desktop PCs?
 
if i were to guess...

id say maybe never ~ chances are that mulitiple cpus or even cpu arrays will become the norm.
...mostly because of cooling issues.

even at our current level ~ PCs are way faster then most ppl need them to be. its really only the enthusiests that are pushing the market.

I wouldn't expect to see that kind of speed anytime in the near future. Super Clusters and Quantum computers would be much closer what we will be seeing. I would expect to see a personal computer with a thousand CPU's or more before I see one running at 1THz.
 
remember, back in the early 90s possibly late 80s, people would laugh at you if you told them that cpus would reach 1 Ghz. And cooling would most definately not be an issue. Do you have any idea how mucxh smaller the cores of today compared to 10 years ago? The cores will constantly get smaller, and speeds will increse, keeping temps about the same all through the cpu life cycle.
 
In order to reach 1THz, the CPUs would have to be 333 times faster than they are today (3.06GHz). How much faster are the CPUs of today compared to 10 years ago? I think we might see such speed in 30 years or so.
 
With the advancments in broadband technology and the incredible speeds that are even now becoming a reality it may come to a point where once they have the infrastructure in place you won't have a traditional PC anymore. You'll just access your account on an incredibly powerful supercomputer/server farm and take advantage of it's resources to the extent the subscription plan you choose permits. I've read speculation on this concept anyways *shrugs shoulders* Obviously there are arguments agaisnt it but it'll probably depend on which offers the more profitable vehicle for parting you from your money and effectively allowing big brother or Corps to "keep tabs" on you 😉 *anticipates the atypical "it'll never happen" response since everyone around here is a former member of the psychic friends network 😛 )

My first home computer ran at 3.5Mhz, a Sinclair ZX Spectrum. Now I can buy a PC at 3000Mhz 20 Yrs later. 857 times faster. If we have linear improvments, in 20 yrs we'll be looking at 2.5Thz, passing 1Thz in 7.6 yrs. 😀
 
i can imagine it now, UT2K3 on a 1 Thz pentium type processor, with an ati radeon 98,000. have like like 8 igs of ram, like 20 TB harddrive. man it will be like playing quake 2 on todays computers.
 
I thought due to the speed of electricity CPU's will top out in the 5GHz range?
Fiberoptics may change that, but electricity does not move @ light speed. In fact it is much slower.

i think intel roadmaps show intel up to like 8ghz in a couple years lol (or close to a couple...maybe more, maybe less, i dont remember exactly)...not "official" roadmaps maybe...but ive seen em somehwre on the net lol

if they can manage to figure out how to control light (ie, make it stop and go at will) then theres TONS of headroom left for faster cpu's

also quantum computers

anyways, the way we are going, smaller and smaller cpu's, i think maybe we'll have a few cpu "cores" on every "platform"
like imagine p4 cores that are ALOT smaller, but like 1 in each corner ...and then 4 of those "platforms" in a pc...mayb less at first, but more later on

then they all work collectively, not like you send one task to one corner processor and another to another....its like a raid0 array but with cpu's, ud send one operation, and it gets divided among the different corner processors (if that possible...)

..and now back to physics haha
 
I remember reading somewhere about a government computer, I think it's called "WHITE" (sure sure) and it's made by IBM.

It's supposed composed of 1000 computers in an array. Much like how stripe raid works, and it's also like how distributed computing works

Intel have had a 10Ghz ALU running in labs.
