I'm trying to organize suit-buying for my wedding, and I'm having troubles. I picked out a nice suit online with a 6" drop (the pants are 6 sizes less than the suit coat), but the guys are freaking out about having to take in either the coat or the pants by 2 - 4 inches.

Has anyone ever had their suit altered down a few sizes? Did it turn out alright? Anything I should know before I decide if this is a deal-breaker?

If they are freaking out, I wouldn't trust their abilities to accomplish what you want.

You don't think the coat would be the bigger problem?

Could be. A coat that's too large doesn't fall down or scrunch up, though. It just looks stupid. The sleeves can be shortened easily.

I would be very hesitant to attempt so much tailoring for so many body types. Tailoring a suit is expensive to begin with and very difficult no matter what...something as simple as having the sides taken in and the sleeves shortened can drastically change the over shape and look of a suit. People wonder why I'm willing to pay over $100 just for alterations...it's because I know the quality of the tailor, I trust his work and I know that I won't be nervous about the changes.

It's hard to try to buy for a group of guys and I've never been in that situation before either. I would never buy a suit that's more than a size too big, as it's already hard enough for me to find something that's remotely well-fitting.

I used to sell suits and 4 inches is quite a bit to be taking out of a trouser waist.

Depending on where they are taking it out of the coat, that could be bad as well.

I would recommend getting suited-separates for better fit and less alterations, if they are available.

why can't each person just be measured to fit their own personal body?

You sound like a candidate for either a custom suit. Another alternative is buying seperates from Jos.A.Bank. You can get a decent suit at a nice price and can buy the pants in your size and jacket in your size which will minimize alterations.

Trust them if they're freaking out about it. They do tailoring all day and they know taking them in that much will just make the clothes look stupid. Then you're stuck with a suit you won't wear due to embarrassment.
