Question about suits...

i bought a suit about a week ago so I can wear it to some interviews. i noticed that a couple of the pockets on the suits are sewn shut, even though they are actual (and not fake) pockets.

why do they do this?

i've also seen this on a couple of pants too.

thanks

My tailor told me that they're sewn shut primarily because if you actually put anything in them that it would really unbalance how the garmet hangs on you and detract considerably from the appearance of the outfit, but told me he'd be happy to cut them open for me if I wanted (they're never more than one thread). I went ahead and did this, but I can definitley see what he means when I put anything like keys in my blazer pocket.... so I just don't do that 😛

just take a razor blade and slit 'em open. I bought a pair of khakis from J. Crew and one of the back pockets was sewn shut on 'em. It annoyed me, because I had to put my wallet in a pocket I'm not used to using. I cut it open with a pair of scissors (one thread) and now they're perfect.

acemcmac: thanks for that insight... that's a very interesting reason.

jumper: thanks for your advice... i've done that before on the pants so i think i'm gonna go ahead and do that to my suit pockets. i won't put anything heavy in there anyway... maybe just a business card or hankerchief.

thanks to the both of ya.

Pants are OK, No one really stares at your butt if you are wearing it for an interview. Even then, JCrews are replaceable, no big problem.

A suit on the other hand can cost hundreds of dollars and what acemcmac said makes total sense. Carry your business card in your shirt pocket and don't decimate your suit.

Listen to your tailor. don't put stuff in your suit pockets, it doesn't look right.

geez, now I sound metro...

It's not like I'm boycotting my pants pockets or something crazy. I only ever need to carry my wallet (front right), a few pens which can go anywhere, my keys (front left) and my cell phone which can either go aside my wallet if the pocket is wide enough or on an inside blazer pocket, or be left in my jacket. Conciously choosing not to use two of the seven pockets I have available to me when I'm wearing my favorite blazer doesn't kill me 🙂

meh, I need a purse.

lighter, cigs, two cell phones, ID, wallet, PDA, portfolio, keys, briefcase, laptop, pen.

gaaaah.

All decent suits come with the pockets sewn shut.
You can cut the single thread that holds it shut if you like. I keep the front pockets of my suit coats swen shut, but I open up the rear pocket on my slacks.
I also open up the inside pockets of the suit coat.
