Question about stray/abandoned pets, cats in particular...

We have a female cat, she is a rescue and we had her fixed, shots, etc. We've had her for about 7 years now. A few months ago this large gray male cat started hanging around our neighborhood. No collar on this cat but he appears to be well groomed, healthy, and very friendly. He is also fixed. Nobody seems to know who he belongs to though. At first we thought he might have been abandoned so we started feeding him and letting him into our house. He has been staying with us almost every night for the past 6 weeks and spending most days with us too.

We have talked with a number of neighbors to see if he belongs to anyone or if anyone knows who he belongs to and have had 1 lead that he might belong to someone on the street behind us. My wife went over there a couple times, knocked on the door, rang the bell and even left her card asking them to call us regarding their cat. She has done this twice. Nobody ever called us.

Well, about a week ago he got into a cat fight with one of the neighbor's cats (a few houses down) and he was injured on his left front leg. It wasn't broken but he was putting less and less weight on it so Saturday I took him to the vet and $400 later he is back with us with a shaved leg and antibiotics. They did find out that he has a chip but is not registered to anyone so we are going to register him to us.

We also have been keeping him in the house for the last few days to try and break him of this desire to go out and get into fights.

Now, I don't know if he belongs to someone but we haven't seen any lost animal signs up and all attempts at contacting the 1 lead we had have come up empty. However, if this person does show up and wants their cat back I'm kind of inclined to politely tell them to go fuck themselves. We love this cat, he's absolutely beautiful, affectionate, and we would like to give him a good home.

What would ATOT do? Besides make a thread about it or nuke from orbit of course.

Put up posters within a square mile. If you don't get a response you should keep him. You sound like you'll make an excellent home for him.

Remember, just because you're an awesome cat owner doesn't mean that his previous owners weren't as well. You said yourself that he was well groomed etc. Give them one last chance.

When he's up and about, put a collar on him with your phone number, see if someone calls or he comes back without it.

Stop letting the cat out to stop it fighting and to make sure you keep it.

What I don't understand is why have it chipped but nothing in it if I am getting that part of the story right?

That cat is lucky you found it. I bought a new truck Friday night and Saturday morning there was a cat on it. I spoke with the cops and this week they are going to send animal control over to my street and round up all the cats. It is going to cost the owners a pretty penny in fines and the strays will likely be euthanized. The fines double the next time I call.

Wow...that's kind of a dick move. What's the worst the cat could do to your hood? Get footprints on it? Afraid someone might think you're a cat lover?

In most places it's illegal to let a cat roam and legal for someone to retain them for their own.

I deal with ferals a lot, if I were to spay/neuter and even have someone's pet ear-clipped there would be nothing they could do short of attempting a civil case. Most of the time they not only lose, but they person that took in the cat is awarded damages.

It's not a dick move. The truck as all my vehicles are ALWAYS parked on my property. People have no right to let their cats roam free and end up on my property. It is illegal in my area to let your cats roam but that does not stop people from letting them because cat owners are usually selfish pretentious dick heads who think kitty has more rights to my property than I do. At least I called the police, which is what the HOA suggested, because when I was younger I would have simply made all the cats disappear because the owners will not take responsibility even when you confront them and ask them nicely. So now they get fined. Not my problem.

So basically what you're saying is that your life lacks meaning and you are taking out your anger on cats? Did I get that right? Maybe you meant to say that you're very materialistic and anything that gets in the way of your shinies is a problem even if it's a living thing like a cat? Maybe you REALLY meant to say that you like to waste our tax dollars calling the cops on cats.

Karma is a bitch. Stay tuned.

HAHAHAHA...you are exactly the selfish pretentious dick head I am talking about. It is my property on my property. What makes you think your cat has more rights to it than I do? It has nothing to do with being materialistic. You people are fucking hilarious. Makes me feel no remorse for getting you fined.

I realize you think you're Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino but you're just a dick for letting paw prints bother you so much.

GET OFF MY LAWN!

I think most had more issue with you getting all excited about the euthanasia part.

You sound like a sicko.

i'm with ronstang on this one. if someone owns a pet they should be a responsible pet owner. this includes watching over it and not having said pet impair on someone else's rights (right to personal property). if someone can't take care of the animal then it should be given up for adoption not left to the wild.

if i were to let my dog crap on your lawn you'd be pissed, right?

Are you suggesting that dogs that crap on your lawn should be euthanized and their owners fined?

Just checking.

Man I must come from a different planet than some of you guys. Life is way too short to hate animals so much.

Well, in some places, the owners definitely should face some kind of penalty for allowing a dog to defecate on someone else's property (if the owner doesn't immediately pick it up).

Assholes let their dog shit in the hallway, right outside the door to my apartment.%}^#*%!!
