Question about Steam/HL2 preloading

Does anyone know about backing up the preloaded files for HL2? I am assuming that nothing other than the Steam installer has been installed, so I should just be able to burn the 2.44 gigs of files to a DVD and if I need to format my HD, just copy the files back to a folder and continue on with what ever future preloading of files there might be... Anyone know or read more about this? I haven't been following Steam or HL2 all that closely.

Actually, I just did this. I just backed up the files I downloaded and stuck back after a re-install. When steam started, it asked if I wanted to preload, I said "ok," and it said I was done. So yes, you can do that.
