Question about SSD seating

So, the other day my gf's Samsung 1tb HDD went belly up, and I took the opportunity to use my previous SSD C: drive (it's an 80gb Intel, I swapped it out for a 180gb Intel earlier this year) as her new C: drive, and to get it back up and running for her ASAP, until I determined what was up with her HDD and, as it turned out, got her a new one.

Well, my HAF case is nice in that it has these plastic, removable, sliding hard drive cases. They fit both SSD and HDD. So I never had to dig through the SSD boxes to see what sort of housings are included. I did that now, and found a metal housing thing.

Problem is, it didn't really help much in getting it properly seated in her case. I managed to get one screw in, but it's sort of diagonal in there. Thought about stuffing some styrofoam or something under it to keep it level... but my instinct was that with an SSD, it shouldn't matter if it's level or not. Am I correct? Should I just not worry about it? Her case is a Dell 8300 pre-built, and maybe was never really meant to have additional hard drives... though there is room. The hard drive area just didn't seem well suited to it. Maybe I missed something about how to get it in there.

The other thing I was wondering, is if there's any reason to make further attempts to get data off her old drive... it seems pretty definitively dead. I'm used to drives sort of showing some signs... but this one seems to have just completely died. I tried putting it in the freezer last night for 12 hours, and then inserting it into a Thermaltake drive reader I got just for this (had been wanting one though and it was on sale) and I got nothing... it did sound like it at least ATTEMPTED to read it after freezing it, whereas I heard nothing like that before.

Is there anything else to try on that?

SSDs don't care how they're mounted. I once used masking tape (duct tape leaves too much residue) to mount a drive in a case that had no room for a proper mount. This would obviously be a bad idea for a spinning drive, but not for a SSD.

As for recovery, in my experience, once it gets to that point, your only recourse is to send it for professional recovery, which is insanely expensive.
