THe problem is that you have to floor it while rolling in traffic, flooring a crappy auto can be very dangerous as you are not in control of the shifting, and therefore resposiveness of the transmission is something you'll have to memorize. Basically, you can end up wrecking because the damn thing didn't shift for he situation.
Manuals however, are very responsive. They WILL slow down if you take your foot off the pedal at a lower gear, and will accelerate smothly until you shift.
Basically, there is nothing wrong with auto except it cannot predict your next move. Of course, depending on whether or not it is a sport tranny, it can change its reactions to certain actions. The advantage of manual in some cases is that you can ANTICIPATE YOUR NEXT MOVE, and have the gear ready the second you need it. THe auto will have to SENSE AND REACT athe critical point. Basically it'll let down the clutch quickly and you'll be jerked around. Manual drivers quickly kearn to slowly release the clutch, so even when you jump down for 5th to 3rd, you accelerate like mad, but you will have let the clutch in easily: "sliiiiiiiipgrrrrrrrrrrrr"
In my opion, manual is only better bacause You control it and because YOU know what's ahead. Until cars can do that manual will always be the best at adapting to situation.
