thought you guys might know. I just realised that I have a speeding ticket unpaid in MD. My license is issued in VA. Was wondering whether this delay would bring about a suspension...

quick replies would be appreciated... on someone elses wireless network :)

well not only will you be suspended...you'll be arrested for stealing! :p

No, I don't think that'll happen as that's not their jurisdiction...but I'm just guessing.

Most states, nowdays, cooperate with each other when it comes to traffic violations. Pay your ticket and quit worrying.

Have a nice day. :)

You can usually mail in your payment. Why don't you give them a call?

Edit: Oh. I don't think you'll have any problems. Just renew your license and see what happens.

Yes. In fact, a new state law in MI requires out of state operators licenses to be CONFISCATED (and a temp license to be issued) until a ticket is paid.

However, I also know that this law is rarely enforced and I've only seen one or two out of state licenses cross my desk since Jan. 1.

Pay your ticket (if it's your first) , and go to traffic school so it wont be in your record.

usually out of state tickets won't be transfered onto you're insurance.

Generally, yes. Unless it's a parking ticket. However, your insurance/state/police department may vary.

False.

Then why have all(around 6 of them) my speeding tickets never affected my insurance rates. I don't think I've ever gotten one in the state that I have resided in.

It depends on your insurance, but generally they will. Driving records are not state-only; they're accessible from anywhere in the nation.

Unpaid tickets will usually bring about suspension in that state and possibly in your home state if they have agreements with them like CT has with NY.

Lousiania will contact the state you live in and turn the ticket over to them to collect. I know this personally :)

texas is also bad about doing this :)

False.

Not false. I have had a number of tickets in various states (NJ, Hawaii, South Carolina) and none of them have ever been transferred to my NYS drivers license. As far as NYS is concerned my record is clean. And each year when my policy is renewed and my record checked, my insurance company checks my NYS record and have never saw any of those tickets, and my NYS license is free of points. Some states share DMV records, others do not. The key is knowing which do and which do not, to avoid future problems.

Look, I'm sympathetic to the problem of expensive ticket and no fund$--been there myself.

But leaving a speeding ticket unpaid is a VERY BAD IDEA.

A court in Maryland could issue a bench warrant for your ARREST (for contempt of court). You could get pulled over (especially if you forget and wander into Maryland, where the cops apparently pull over about 32% of all drivers per day) and taken in to the hoosegow. That would just ruin your afternoon. Unpaid tickets have a nasty way of becoming outstanding warrants.

And yes, out of state tickets often show up in other unexpected ways. Many states share moving violation data for "points" against your license. And there's no way to just ignore this and hope it goes away, like an out-of-state parking ticket. Also, major insurance companies have AMAZINGLY comprehensive records. I live near you, and I got nailed over a speeding ticket (which was paid) in NEW MEXICO.

So, please, don't mess with this. You HAVe to pay it, and you'd be wise to pay it SOON. End of sermon.

thanks for all the info guys... seems like I was being a bit paranoid. I managed to talk to someone and found out that the court date is set for the 20th of Sept. Thats like 4 months away from the ticket date. I just have to pay up before that... :) Should be getting paid before that...

BTW, the lady I talked to said that no points will transfer to my license, so YAY!
