Question about Socket 775 Installation / Thermal Paste

My friend just bought a new mobo and P4 Socket 775 chip and he's in the middle of mounting everything in his case. Thermal paste didn't come with the processor, but there is a thermal pad on the heatsink. Does he need to use paste or is the pad enough?

Thanks for the help, any suggestions would be great.

The pad is fine if you don't overclock and have decent ventilation. Asus wouldn't warrantee it for 3 years otherwise.
