There is a lot less hassle if you upgrade to the 6850. The 6850 will perform better, create less noise then SLI'd 9800GTXs, draw less power and take up less space.

In my opinion, it's always better to get the fastest single card within the budget. Once your needs and budget exceed single card performance, then it's time to look at crossfire or SLI. Yes there are exceptions in the mid-high end, but it's a pretty good general rule.

edit: If you're ok with mail in rebates, this 6870 is $170 shipped after MIR.

edit 2: What's your resolution??

Ya, it looks like you're going to have a good match either way you go.

I would tend to agree with the others and go with a single card. If you want to try AMD then, sure, the 6850 is a great value - if you like Nvidia then the GTX 460 1gb would be a good choice (stay away from the SE version).

The two cards trade blows

If you're not in a hurry then sit back and keep your eye on the hot deals forum (or slick deals website) and wait as you often see the 460 on sale for $140ish

Here's one for $130 AR (at the time of this post it was anyhow)

The 6850 will be about 2x as fast as your card, so it will be faster than 2 9800gtxs too.
