Disclaimer... I'm not asking this question to cheat or anything, just trying to satisfy some curiosity.

I was at a friends parent's house yesterday for the super bowl and he and his buddies love to play party poker. A few of them brought over their computers and using the available wireless network a couple of them tried to jump on the same table. P.P. came back and said that they're system detected that the same person was already on the table... I'm not looking for a way around this, but i want to know how they arrived at that conclusion... any ideas???

Presumably because P.P. uses your public IP address to help identify you. All users on that WiFi network had the same public IP address, since they are all sharing a common address via NAT technology.

Is that because the router or the cable modem??? I thought all the client ip's would be different.. i guess not the case... This event just made me question what i thought i knew about this stuff... Can you expound on NAT tech?

is it possible to create two different public IP's or is this just something that we're stuck with. I'm guessing that the router has to be capable of this? When will IPV6 be implemented?

You can ask your ISP for a lease on more IPs and buy a switch. Problem solved. I had 3 or 5 at one time with Comcast. I can't really remember.

Suggestion: Instead of buying several IP addresses you could route each internal machine through a different proxy server. I don't think the poker sites like people doing this however, as some people try to fill a table with people they know, then allow one stranger to join and rip them off.

If you have that many friends who want to play PartyPoker at your house, why not just play with THEM? With REAL cards, chips, beer, cigars, etc. At least when you lose, your money will go to your friends, not some stranger.

Good call on the rerouting through a proxy. If I recall correctly I only spent about $5 more a month to have the setup I had. But rerouting is a good way to go as well. There are some interesting setups you can build out using all kinds of tools. ;)

I don't know anything about PartyPoker, but this seems to make it a REALLY bad idea to play, unless you are the group ripping people off. It'd be easy to set up a group to play and exchange card values, even with the group members at their own homes.

Well with all the money you are stealing from cheating, you could probably buy the extra public IP Addresses.

Did i miss-read your post, or did you have the same setup i'm looking for...
Look, i appreciate the assumption that i'm the one doing the cheating, i'm not... granted, i'm helping him... i told him it was possible, he's already paid me a fair amount of money, and i dont want to return it. Turns out that hes not really cheating, he just wants to play in more than a couple tourneys at a time... I'm sure i'll figure it out.

I was more than happy to show and tell.... but then you had to go and bring the cheating into it. I'm not sure if the setup I had would help you cheat, but either way we'll never know. I'm sure you will figure it out.

So, which story is the truth?
