Question about Samsung 955DF 19" monitor (or another better 19")

Telinar, I'm not an expert on this, but it was the spec sheet that prompted me to call Samsung. Since the maximum vertical is listed as 160hz and it seemed very unlikely that the maximum refresh rate was the same from 640x480 up to 1024x768, I wondered whether what are listed as "VESA presets" in the manual represented max refresh rates. And I could see that there was a clear difference between 85hz and 100hz. Since there's a 3-year warranty on the monitor, I didn't see why Samsung would give me info that would lead me to run it out of spec. I've been doing it for about a year and a half with no problem.

What do you have hawk vision or something? I mean 1600x1200 on a 19"? What, er...how,, why? I mean I've been using 19" monitors for years now and have settled in on 1152X864. When I was feeling giddy, i'd bump things up to 1280x1024 - plenty of desktop space, but the strain on my eyes was just too much! Now i'm talking desktop here ofcourse, when I run my games if still like to enjoy the higher resolutions for clarity, but still 1600x1200 is still not in my world here - yeah maybe if I had a G4 TI4600 to keep those FPS high at the those resolutions.

Maybe it's me but if i'm going to really enjoy 1600x1200 resos, it's going to be on atleast a 21" monitor with a powerful vid card to keep it smooth.

My 19" goes up to 1920x1440. I used to run it at that, but the refresh rate was too low (77Hz) and my roomate complained. I didn't want him messing with my settings, so I put it down to 1600x1200x85Hz. I have 20/13 vision, if that explains any of it.

The monitor is a Viewsonic P95f

I used 1280x960 @ 80Hz on an old 17 inch Iiyama monitor. It was flicker-free, but the monitor had a slight problem with being blurry (no, it's not my eyes, it's the monitor). BTW, 20/13 vision won't help you (I'm 20/15 with my glasses), since, unless you're farsighted (forget the correct medical term for it), you're going to see just fine up close any other way. 🙂

It does seem odd that the max refresh rate for lower resolutions will be listed at almost the same refresh rates as higher resolutions. Perhaps it is not recommended that monitor be run at those refresh rates at lower resolutions even though it is able. Can anyone with more knowledge about this monitor illuminute us on this? Refresh rates can be calculated roughly by [(Horizontal Refresh Rate x 1000) / Horizontal resolution] x .95. If we calculate the refresh rate using the highest horizontal refresh rate and the lowest resolution, then it does indeed give us roughly 160Hz.

(85000/480) x .95 = 168.229

At a resolution of 1024 the refresh rate would be:

(85000/1024) x .95 = 78.85

78.85 is quite close to 80Hz, which Samsung lists as the max refresh rate for the 955DF at 1280x1024. Perhaps the Samsung can produce refresh rates of over 100Hz, but definately not at high resolutions.

Anandtech has a review of this monitor, which includes a spec page as well. http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1612&p=2

Very few monitors have refresh rates of 100Hz at higher resolutions such as 1280x1024. Even if you set it to that refresn rate in your computer, the monitor will not display it at that resolution.

To try to determine the maximum refresh rates, in Display Properties I checked Hide Display Properties this Monitor Cannot Display. When I did so, the maximum refresh rate shown for 1024x768 was 100hz, for 1152x864 it was 85hz, and for 1280x1024 it was 75hz.

Dunno what is up with your computer then... This monitor is not supposed to display 1024x768 at 100Hz.

Telinar, perhaps Samsung Technical Support gave me the correct answer. BTW, I've done this on three different machines with both XP and W2K. Don't assume that VESA presets captures maximum refresh rates, although, like you, I'd like a real expert to address this.

I've got my Samsung 950b running @ 1024x768 @ 100hz refresh. You can definitely tell when you drop the refresh rate, it really fatigues your eyes in games and such 🙁

I can't claim to be a "real expert"... but it seems highly unlikely that a quality monitor like the 955DF would only do 10*7@80. Most users/pros seem to regard 85Hz as a sort of "standard" mark... a good balance between absence of flicker without going overboard. I have SyncMaster 753DF and usually run 1024*768 at 85Hz. 955 is higher-end, plus I would probably run 1152*864 or 1280*960 on a good 19". So I would expect at least the ability to run 1152*864 @ 85Hz if I were looking for a 19-inch. Which I am, actually... 😕

I've got a Samsung SyncMaster 753DF and I love it.

My brother!!! I recommend set it to 1024*768, and go to monitor properties and set it to 85Hz. When I need more screen real estate, I use 1152*864, but our monitors will only support 75Hz at that res, which to me makes a difference in eyewear.... plus i get a little blurry, i'm currently blaming the crappy GF3 Ti200 for that... :frown:

Hiya all,

I just recently purchased this monitor. The design and appearance is excellent. However, I am running into problems simialr to what butch84 said. I cannot set my refresh rate higher than 60hz @ 1280x1024 without the monitor noticeably flickering.

When I unhide all the refresh rates in windows and try something higher, you can see a lot of flickering. Right now I am at 60 hz and in WinXP it is ok (but 60hz is so low for a 19" monitor!!). When I play games, I can definitely see flickering. Anyone encountering these problems and have ideas on how to solve it? I know this is a great monitor but this is putting a hamper on it.

Thanks for your help in advance! 🙂

Vid card used: Radeon 8500 LE w/ recent drivers
