Question about S-IPS technology..

SIPS is dead IMO because LCD's are commoditzed today. To the average user, the ones who really set the market, there is no difference between a TN, PVA or IPS. All being sharp convergence, thin, light, color etc so they buy on price. Tough to sell $500 19"ers (SIPS LCD1990SXi) competing with $140 19"ers (TN's all the time) Let alone $1600 large displays like Painman gots.

This commoditization (along with LCDs) is also what killed off high end AG CRTs like uNX diamondtron (Dec 05) and FD Trinitons (Dec 04)- they still make cheap invar shadow masks to this day but no -trons dispite thier far superior everything compared to SM competition.

no such thing, Double that or get lucky with a $340- Dell 2007WFP -Still almost double your desired price.

I was afraid that was the case. I wonder what the guys on the ultra high-end market doing graphics work will end up using though? CRTs will wear out at some point, and I can't see them using TNs or MVAs.

The death of -tron monitors doesn't surprise me though. The shift to LCDs is inevitable, so they'd be the first target.

PS S-IPS prices aren't that bad, the LCD2070NX is $450-ish, though obviously that's still hundreds over a TN panel

TN's are cheap to make compared with the other technologies. Advantages are quick reaction times and cheaper, since they're more resilient to manufacturing errors and particles so their yields are relatively high compared with the other types.

VA's (MVA, PVA, what have you) are basically TNs but in multiple directions. Rather than directing the light straight (perpendicular to the screen) like with TN, VA have different regions which direct the light toward different directions -- i.e. a region that points to the left, another that points to the right, etc. This increases the viewing angle but means the reaction time increases; also, since manufacturers apparently forgot to include a region that points straight up, this also means that when looking straight-on at the screen, the quality is somewhat less than looking at it slightly diagonally, since straight-on is not the primary direction of any region -- you're basically looking at a TN from say a 30 degree angle when you look at a VA head-on.

I'm not that familiar with IPS technology so got nothing to say about that 😉

The future is probably going to go toward TN, but not only because of price -- it's also because TN quality is steadily improving. As TN quality improves, the average consumer is more going to notice the price differential between TN and other types rather than how much benefit the other types will bring; the cheaper price also means that more people can trend toward this technology compared with other technologies. Think of economy flying versus business or first class 50 years ago compared with today.

Well if people wanna get a TN panel thats fine. I owned one for a few weeks and I can honestly say that I dont like them. Poor viewing angle, pictures look horrible. Go S-IPS!

So ebeattie... You got rid of that TN 22-incher... Don't want to say it but... told you so 😉
Your questions about the Sceptre 22-inch made me believe you would not be satisfied with a TN.

Despite the fact that S-IPS is a bit better than S-PVA, P-MVA or A-MVA, I still thing that catching a Dell 2407 rec 04 on sale is a great buy. And you can return it if you don't like it. I am looking at other 24-inchers, but I have the feeling that when time comes, the price/quality ratio of the Dell will get me.
