Question about Roses

My father told me once that you give roses with thorns to someone you love, like your spouse or a very serious bf/gf. The thorns meaning you are willing to take the bad with the good (ie love hurts). I was just wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this? Or maybe they've heard some other reason?
 
I give roses with thorns to my wife hoping she will prick herself 🙂

Now that I have little girls who like flowers I make sure there are no thorns.
