How horrible... I have no idea who would do that. It's a highly specialized name, not usable by anyone else unless they really wanted to sell it back... problem is, person who originally owned it used it for all their marketing/advertising purposes, and now they don't know what to do.

There are lots of people here on AT who know you, don't like you, and could easily have taken advantage of your posting in OT about the domain with a company that they're associated with. I wouldn't be surprised.

If it is, as you say, a highly specialized name you can take them to court for websquatting unless they develop the site. It's how Microsoft shut down MikeRoweSoft.com, how AOL keeps getting damn near every domain with "AOL" in it. If the business that bought them actually had a plan for the domain it would potentially be an issue, but if they're just holding on to it (e.g. you may purchase this domain from so-and-so, bids under $500 will not be considered) you should be able to get it back in court.

Wow, what scum! I let my domain expire with my hosting company, but I just reregged it the day or two after. Are you saying YOUR registrar said "sure you can have it back for $200" or is this the other company that picked it up? If it's the company that you originally regged it with, I'd find another company!

Many times, when you have a long weird domain name that nobody would want but you, and the site has been up for a while, it appears on search engines. Webcrawlers will automatically notice that it is no longer registered and notify an admin, who will then register it and put a domain squat page up, just to get the search engine hits.

It sucks. That's why I paid 5 years in advance last time.

This is exactly the reason that websquatting laws have been put into place. Most of the time they won't even show up in court to defend their ownership of the domain, so you get it back for the effort it took to file the appropriate forms.

Thats how every registrar would be. For them to retrive a domain from icann, before it is avaliable to the general public, they have to pay an very high fee. Its not like simply wanting to register a domain thats not registered.

I went through this recently. It is just an idiosyncracy of their site. Just login and renew and you'll be set.

Eh, it's not mine. It was for a friend of mine, and I highly doubt that's the case. And those people who don't like me don't know me... I haven't had any major issues with anyone I've met in person except for one, a guy from these forums who I went on a "date" with, didn't click with, and took it personally. Otherwise, I like everyone who I've met and I think they get along with me pretty well too... they come to meetups, anyway.
