question about resume

I'm writing a resume for elec/computer engineering internships at a career fair this week..
Being a freshmen, I have barely anything to put on it.

Would mentioning that I have good "sketching/artistic skills" be a good idea? It is a good form of technical communication...

Wouldn't presentation not lead to the idea of being able to draw well, and instead point to a powerpoint whoring ability?

You are a freshman. You have no real world experience. We know this as corporations.

You need to show that you are not lazy (put landscaping or restaurant work on that resume).

If you went far in the boyscouts, that is important. After one internship though, never list it again.

If we can assume you spent your summer golfing, we probably are not interested.

You have no collegiate GPA. Brag about your high school standing. If you can't you are in trouble.

The big thing though ..... talk and show interest! This is hard to swallow (I've been there) but the people that you are talking to were once in your shoes. You need to show a genuine interest and drive. The people at the job fair will be taking notes and if you impress them, their companies human resources people will be put on notice. How you carry yourself one on one is more important than anything. You can be soft spoken and say very little, but if you want to do something specific as a freshman, tell the people this!

Having said that .... what is it that you want to do? Electrical and Computer engineering is a wide range of topics. This covers microprocesor design and fabrication. This covers signal processing. This covers simple things like planning street lighting. Tell us ATOT nerds what it is that you really want to do. We can help out more this way.

And research the companies at the job fair. Just because IBM is coming, do not assume they are doing processor design. You are probably dealing with a specific site. Know the site and what they do specifically.

Oh, bigger companies scan those resumes and do searches for keywords. They don't simply have an open slot and spend time reading all the resumes they have. They filter them.

Make sure you get the keywords in that resume.

Oh, and have fun when you are at college, but ge that GPA up there! 3.0 is fine, but aim for 3.5 or better. Even if you get no internship this year, a good GPA will help tremendously with getting one after your sophomore year.

gpa means squat nobody bothers - I have never when I interview but I do look for skills like good clear and concise communication with creative thinking no freshman however smart can succeed if they cannot get their idea across.

Oh, thanks 🙂 Nice info;

I don't know yet what I want to do, anything is good. Working on something computer-related is ideal (intel, nvidia, ati), but company is good.

I'm at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 🙂

edit =I've put President of Web Team, Member of Math Team, Math Tutor for 2 years, and VOlunteer at Hospital on the resume. (all high school things I put on my college app).

You could start with proper grammer.

It's freshmAn.

Edit: and no, I didn't read the thread before I posted

Also, your college should have a CRC where they'll review your resume for you.
