question about repairing windshield rock chip

I got a rock chip on the freeway today ... arghhhh..

OK I called a couple repairers, and they say they charge $50 to repair it.
Should I just go to pep boys and repair it myself? or it a better idea to let them do it?

update: I went to get it repaired professionally.. there is NO WAY that a kit can do the same job that this guy did.... he drilled the crack by a little bit, then used a machine to fill the crack
 
Is it like a bullseye or just a chip? How deep is it? When the temperature changes the bullseye can expand pretty quickly.

I've used one of those kits before and they worked really well. I had a rather shallow round chip.
 
In Washington state I can get it done for free two ways. One insurance. They usually pay it outright since its cheaper to pay 50 than have a windshield replaced. The other way is there are a lot of places doing free repair on windshields. Ive never done it but I think they take your name address etc... basically target of spam mail and stuff..

From personal experience, if you claim on insurance, they'll indeed waive the deductible, that will count against you when it comes time to renew your insurance (in the form of raising rates).
 
hmm Im actually thinking of replacing the window..

but it will cost major $$$... and I might get another chip in the future..


I am thinking of replacing the window (and other dents that I might have) before I sell the car, can I do this by using my insurance??

Depend on the type of car and your insurance deductible of course. Some windshields are only $200s, some $500 and more.

I am thinking of replacing the windshield and other possible damage that the car might have in the future, can I just pay the deductible and make my insurance company pay for the rest??

 
the places that charge you like 50-100 bucks for a repair covers it under warranty that it wont fail. If it does they'll usually replace the whole windshield.

That's how the place where I got mine fixed is. They charged me 75 bucks but if it fails for any reason. They'll replace the whole windshield free.

My windshield is $500 bucks. 🙁

has some type of sensor shiet on the top of the glass.
 
The good kits are not cheep. If your not comfortable doing it, pay to have it done.

The sooner you get it done, the better the repair. Because less dirt will be present in the crack. I'm talking about the contamination you can not see.

Trucking companies I have worked for did their own w/s repairs all the time.....:sun:

My insurance company has a $100 deducable on windshields. However, if it can be repaired, they will pay upto $100 to fix it (beyond that it's back to the deductable). iirc, you can do this twice a year. I guess $50 repairs is worth eating 100% of the cost when thier portion of a windshield would be $150.
 
I've never had to pay (directly) for chips in my windshield. Many insurance companies waive your deductable for minor windshield repairs. We have a great local windshield repair company that will drive to your place of business and fix your car out in the parking lot while you work. All I have to do is give them my insurance information and call up my insurance company (State Farm) and let them know the repair is being done. That it's. I've done this several times now and have never had to pay directly out of my pocket (beyond what I pay for the auto insurance to begin with) since the repair company bills the insurance company directly.
