question about regular cable into an HDTV

The "more information" specs say it's cable ready with a 75ohm coax input, so yes.

? Inputs: Rear A/V Composite, Left/Right Audio, High Definition Multimedia Interface, YPrPb Component Video, 75-Ohm Coaxial RF Connects Antennas, Boxes, VCRs, VGA Connects to Computers, S-Video for Clean and Crisp Video
? Operational Features: Cable Ready, Digital Cable Ready, Integrated NTSC Tuner, Parental Controls, On-Screen Adjustment Menu, Progressive Scan, Integrated ATSC Tuner Means No Separate Box, Closed Caption, Auto Sound

Yep, you'll be able to watch TV. As a bonus, it looks like it has a QAM tuner, so you should get NBC/ABC/FOX/PBS in HD as well. Plus, if you have Comcast, you can watch the OnDemand content other people are watching.

I've seen several movies and believe it or not, porn, on the stuff my QAM tuner pulls in.

sweet. What do I need to get these channels? Surely I just don't need the coaxial cable from the cable in the wall.. do I?

That's it. Just do one of those channel scans when you get it and it should pick up your local HD channels as well. Over the air HDTV rocks.

I have the same coax that went into my SDTV plugged into my Panasonic Plasma and I get 6 HD local channels, plus anything that's currently being watched On Demand.

If you've never had an HDTV before, make sure you give it enough time to scan for channels when it goes through them. It takes much longer than a regular TV does when it's finding the digital channels so don't get impatient and cancel the process.

You have no control over the OnDemand stuff you get, when I'm bored I just flip through the range of channels where it appears and see what's on. If whoever's watching it pauses it, it gets paused on your screen too.

ok

can an ATSC tuner get HDTV channels or is that only QAM?

ATSC = Over-the-air HDTV channels
QAM = Cable channels, HDTV or otherwise. Also, most QAM is encrypted, hence the need for the cable box.

The specs say it gets over-the-air HD channels, and your cable line might or might not act as a good enough antenna for that.

Cable HD channels: not likely. You'll probably just get the analog cable set, not any of the digital or HD channels.

Wait - does this assume you are already paying for some type of cable service through your cable company and have a "live" cable drop? Or do all cable outlets automatically output the "free" channels (including HD) whether I am actually paying for a cable service or not?

Right now I have digital cable through Time Warner, and I just bought an HDTV (Sharp Aquos LC46D64U). I have a digital cable box right now, and they said I could exchange it for an HD box for no extra charge. However, I really don't watch TV that much except for the free channels like FOX, so I was considering dropping that service to save the money. My questions are:

1. Does having the HD box from TW gain me any channels that I couldn't get by just running the coax cable from the wall straight into my TV and using my TV's built in tuner? I mean, not every channel has an HD counterpart, right?

2. If I cancel my cable service, can I still access free channels by running the coax cable from the wall to the TV? For some reason I figured they would kill the cable drop and I would have to use an antenna.
