Anyone know what exactly is the definition for reckless driving? I got a speeding ticket last night and the officer said that he could wrote me tickets for tailgating and wreckless driving. Well... if I was "speeding," why would I be sitting behind someone? He said my reckless driving came in after I had passed the car and moved over one more lane to make a right hand turn.

It's "reckless", moron.

Reckless = wild carelessness and disregard for consequences. Don't have to be "speeding".

i've tailgated ppl at like 80mph before... so its not impossible to speed and tailgate. when a cop pulls u over and u already know u done something wrong... just swallow the consequences and be prepared to ask for a plea bargain.

Well I'm not looking to get out of the ticket completely. I just wanted to know what wreckless was defined as. I understand that yes, I was speeding, but I did not tailgate or drive wrecklessly. I was the only one out on 12 Mile with this other car and no one's life would have been in danger because of me sitting a little above the speed limit. All I want is to get put on probation so that I don't get beat up with having points on my driver's license by my insurance company. Oh yeah... the signature is a joke because my car has a four cylinder in it...

Reckless driving is pretty much whatever the officer thinks it is at any given moment, and most traffic court judges are going to side with him.

The cool part is he only wrote me up for speeding, not reckless... I'm just thinking he might try and be wise by using the term. I dunno anymore... All I know is that I'm calling for a court date Monday.

In Indiana tailgating is considered reckless driving and it is a felony if so charged! That according to a Indiana State Patrolman that I happened to meet and talk myself out of a ticket.

Btw, he couldn't find his ass with both hands imho!:)

As was said above, it all depends on your state. In most, anything > 20mph over the limit is considered reckless/careless. In many, it can be if the cop feels you are doing something dangerous - crossing more than 1 lane of traffic at once (which you said you did), traveling too fast for prevailing conditions (rain/snow/fog) regardless of whether or not you are speeding, tailgating, putting makeup on in the rear-view mirror while driving, etc.

Reckless or careless (depending on state) really sucks as far as insurance goes. It is very common for people with DWI's to plea down to careless and the insurance companies know that.

Better hope that there aren't any Indiana State Patrolmen on this board. If there are, don't drive through Indiana any time soon. :p

OH, GEEEZ, AMDstunna. If you're in Indiana you're going to the state penitentury to share a cell with Bubba! Buy plenty of soap on a rope before they haul you off and always sleep on your back.

To find out what exactly reckless driving is, AMDStunna, go to your local DMV and get a copy of the driver's manual. It should be defined in there as well as careless driving. If you're looking for damage control on the ticket or to get out of it completely, Google is your friend. There are a ton of websites out there, search for "beating a speeding ticket."

I'm not even looking for that. I just don't want the points because of me being 19, in college, and not making jack for money.
