Hey yall,

I have a question about a hard drive I purchased today. It's the WD 80GB SE. It's the whole kit. Model: WD800JBRTL in case anyone is wondering. It has the 8MB cache obviously since it is the SE. I bought it from Circuit City today. They had it on sale for $80.00!!!! WOW! I couldn't belive it. Everywhere I look for it online it's more than $100.00. So what's my question? This is my question. Is there any reason why I should be afraid to get this HD from Circuit City? I just want to have a good HD, and I didn't know if retail stores like CC didn't sell the highest quality that I might get if I bought from newegg or some other online store like that. I think I really got a good deal today. I basically get ONE dollar for every ONE GB. Any opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all for your help.

Geez....I just checked their webpage and the stores in my area have it for $140 before $60 in mailin rebates. After I paid tax it would cost me like $93, which is still $15 less than I paid online for the OEM version. Wow... Did you get to pay that price flat out or do you have to do the rebates? I remember last product I bought from Circuit City (a Palm m130) was supposed to be $250 and then $50 mailin rebate making it $200....they screwed up on their rebates and were selling it for $199 out the door. Hopefully you got a deal like that! If that's the case I may go buy one :) As for quality, I may be wrong, but I'd say you don't have anything to worry about.

If you pay more than a $1 per gig for any internal IDE drive, then you have paid too much. You can always find these drives on sale or after rebate for less than $1 per gig. Outpost/Frys had the WD SE edition 160 GB drive for $140 after rebates or in store for $120 after rebates. I have never had a problem with getting the rebates either. They just take a little longer than you would usually expect.

There is no difference in quality from retail B&M to online, other than maybe price. Given the fact that e-tailers rarely offer crazy rebates and don't price match competitors, chances are you'll get a better price at a B&M for a HDD. The only retail items I would definitely say no to at a B&M are mobos and CPUs (as they are always more expensive than online) and memory (unless you fully research it and know what you are getting). Otherwise retail peripherals are just fine.

Yes, I paid the full $139.99 for the HD. I'm home with my family for Christmas in Michigan so sales tax is only 0.6% which brought the grand total to $148.40. After the two rebates of $20 and $60. I will have only paid $88.39 for the HD. Which I guess brings it a little more than $1 for a GB. But it's close enough. I'm pretty happy with this deal because I haven't been able to find any other good deals online.

This website :) Check out the hot deal forums. There is also f@twallet.com which mirrors many of the same deals as here, but they list coupon codes and such. There are some pretty creative ways to get the deals, so its not for the weak-of-heart, but for the most part the deals listed are legit, and if not, they are locked or go "DEAD" quickly.

Tell me where I can get some $10 10GB drives! It's hard to get a $40 40GB drive as well. (unless it's some old genny 5400 RPM slug!)

Cheers!

Staples had a Maxtor 7200 RPM 30 GB HD a couple of weeks ago for about $30. Why would you want to get a 10 GB? For something that small you might try to find it in the forsale/trade forum. Hard drive prices are falling faster than my 401K.
It costs more for the housing of the hard drive then it does for the disks. What I mean is that the casing will still cost say $30 for a 40 GB and $30 for $120 GB drive. The higher density disks might cost a little more to produce but will have a greater profit margin for the companies.

Oh, getting the 80 GB for $88 is a good deal. It is right around the sweet spot of a $1/gig. I have picked up a 60 GB maxtor for about $5 and a 80 GB WD Special Edition for $33. So the deals are out there. You just need to look and be a little patient.
