Question about RAID0

Hello all. I am currently trying to put together a Raid0 array, and have a quick question. Raid obviously works best with two identicle drives, but what if the drives are the same capacity and similar speed (Maxtor D740X && Western Digital "BB"), but different manafactures? Should I really go out of my way to find an identicle drive, or would the small (neglagible perhaps?) proformance hit from slightly different timings not be worth the added cost?

AFAIK the size is the only difference. One 50 gig and one 40 gig would only let you do 40+40.

I would venture a guess to say that the system would only be as fast as the slowest component i.e., the array would work fine but just not at its full potential if say one drive was 5400 the other 7200.
 
Jittles is right, your RAID0 speed will be N*slowest_drive_speed -overhead.
I don't think it's worth to buy another drive thought...
 
Yeah, the faster of the two will slow down to match the slower of the two because they have to both receive data at the same time and if one takes longer to receive the data then the other ends up waiting. If they are both the same size and the same rotation, then I probably wouldn't spend the money to get a new one because they will probably be close enough.
