Question about raid

Ok I have a Maxtor diamondmax Plus 60; 40 gig harddrive. I have onboard raid. I kindof want to make use of it. I know I have to get the same size harddrive so I was thinking of getting Maxtor's new 40GB 7200 rpm drive. It's a different model and I've read it's faster then the old one. The main question is if I buy maxtors new 40GB and raid it with my older 40gb will i have any problems? If one drive is faster then the other will that cause corruption? I'm not to familier with raid so I don't know the do's and dont's. I'm gonna set it up on raid 1 I believe that is it. So it combines both harddrives and shows up as one. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You'll have no problems, but it's best to have two of the exact same HDDs.

It is recommended to get the same drive (same model), however, you proabably will not run into problems....

the limiting factor in your performance is your old harddrive...

The access times are different on the two drives.....so there will be delays. With a two disk configuration you could expect
up to 15% increase speed .....if the two drives are synchronised.....yours are not so at a guess from previous trials maybe 7-8%.
I am not sure if you are saying that one disk is 5400 and a 7200 is to be its partner...if that is the case you may well find a degradation of access time of 7/8% !!!
You will now have your data split on two drives giving you the dubious blessing of a X2 factor of crashing!
Your speed increase/decrease will also be depend on the "Stripe Bandwith" you choose for your usage.
A suitable stripe for video editing is not so useful for Data or music etc.(ie 32bit stripe or maybe say 1024bitstripe)
Picking the wrong stripe will enhance the degradation by a considerable factor.
To achieve a good all-round balance of speed and security....a Four disk array is of benefit, at a cost of course.
You then need to see if your power supply is adequate for the job of running 2/4 disks at once! Cooling?
A seperate RAID card is to be preffered to the cut down instruction set found on most motherboards on-board chipsets
Major shareholders in Westinghouse etc salute you for these ventures.
Gung Ho!😀

My current drive is 7200RPM the new drive will also be 7200RPM. But is it really worth it? I kindof want to try raid out, i dont really need it though. I just have money burning a hole in my pocket. Mabey I will just buy a new case for a 3rd computer instead.

If you do'nt need RAID and most home users do'nt.....there are loads of goodies out there to play with.
If its a speedy hard drive you want....there is a 15000rpm beast out there I read a review on last year.
Cheetah or Barracudda of some such wildlife name rings a dim and distant bell.
When I feel the need for speed, I just open a jug of Cider and look out to sea for a while.
I keep meaning to build a fast new machine, but after the Cider....I can't remember why?
Gung Ho!😀
