Question about proposal for signature images...

Would it be possible (what with the new server and all) to have images in signatures that display that user's stats for that team? I see that lots of sites have this (SilentPCReview F@H) and I was wondering if the mods would allow these images.

I think (maybe not on this forum), that images are allowed in signatures? All you need is somewhere to get the image created.

Fusetalk does support images in posts (and presumably signatures, but I've never paid close attention). However, AnandTech has disabled that feature, and for that to the Mods I am quite thankful.

Unfortunately, some people can never let things rest, and always have to be stirring the pot, but since I've bitten on this one, I'll go ahead and explain my philosophy, for what it's worth. AnandTech has always seemed to have more "professional" forums (though the left-side ads decreased that slightly IMHO) than some other places that have little flashing and rotating icons, animated user-uploaded avatars that are way too big, and epileptic-seizure-inducing banners in user sigs. While I can see that for some there might be a good reason to allow inline images (such as DC stats), there's also the issue of taking all the "$#!7" out to the trash can, and as the moderators already seem quite busy, I doubt they would want more work. Additionally, for those of us that are on dialup, unnecessary images increase already slow page load times.

So there you have it; that's my opinion. Feel free to respectfully disagree, or flame me to #311 for it, but that's what I think.

Throw my vote in with jliechty and BlackMountainCow. I think that too many other forums have turned into a wankfest of who can cram more images into 1 post.
I think the images would cheapen the board, and cheapen the whole affair.

Kinda like the difference between a woman in leopard print spandex pants, and a woman in a designer suit.

Geoff, nobody here that I know of would object to a

 tag. I, for one, would love to have such a thing! It's the inline images that I certainly don't want to see enabled. :)

Apparently not true... I posted this in Forum Issues and was told that because it could be abused, it wouldn't be implemented... how one can abuse the code tag is beyond me... ASCII pr0n perhaps? :confused:  

I don't see any hope for image tags unless it could be limited to particular forums with audiences mature enough to not abuse it.  I could see it's usefulness in posting graphs, etc here in DC and I'm sure other forums could benefit too (Tech Support for example).  Too bad that the moronic minority spoils it for the rest...

Yeah, I remember that thread. The point is that there are very few, if any, forum members that would object. Jason aka Zuni does not seem to get the point, even though he does claim to understand. This whole abusing-the-code-tag pseudoexample that they hide behind makes no sense whatsoever, because unnecessary-page-width-manipulation can already be caused by "abusing" the quote tag, and byWritingLotsOfWordsStrungTogetherWithoutAnySpacesInBetweenToPreventThemFromWrappingInMostWebBrowsers. The mods simply edit, delete, or give vacations for this already, so what would be any different about code tags? Especially if they are only enabled in a few select forums (Software, DC), the chances of abuse would be very slim, and would thus not present a much larger moderation burden for the moderators.

I am admin on another forum, and yes some members need their images edited in signatures but it is no big hassle. How about having it only enabled for those who have x amount of posts?

I think it really sucks that the img code tag is disabled.

Why does the code tag have to mess with the formatting? Use some VB or Javascript to make a "code window" between the tags. I did this for a web site for where I work. I can't post the code because they own it, not me . But basicly, some Vb script takes what is between the

 tags and turns it into a horizontal and vertical scrolling frame in the post.  It is set to take up a set % width of the avaialbel area, and can be up to a specified length befire a vertical scrollbar comes into play, so the code scrolls, not the thread.

It would take about 10 minutes to cod eif you know what you are doing.

I agree with Evadman,

vBulletin has a small "text box" on the page which code goes in, and scrolls both ways if necessary.


I also agree that Code should be turned on, but images should not. I have seen MANY forums, and where you have people using custom avatars and images in their signatures, hell, even images in posts, it makes it look unprofessional. I'd prefer for people to put links in their posts and signatures, then I can load them up if I want to, not because you want me to
