A garter is what a girl wears on her leg. Ever see a weeding where the bride throws the flowers and the single ladies try to catch it? And then the groom throws the garter to all the single guys and they try to catch it? Its that head band looking thing with lace and stuff...

It wasn't to me and my friends - we just paired up, went in a group, and hung out like we normally would. I don't get the prom-mania, except that maybe it's the last chance for these guys to get laid in the next ten years. 😛

LOL. Nah, prom isn't really a big deal. At least where I'm at (southern cal). Mine consisted of just hanging out with friends.

I think HotChic got it right when she said "it's the last chance for these guys to get laid in the next ten years." That is, unless they do squat in college. 😛



With this garter thing...I take it it's not done often in the west, because this is the first time I've ever heard of it.
 
There's usually a specific point in time during the dance where everybody does it.

At my school, the guys take the garter off of the girl and then you give them your bowtie. Yes, you buy a cheap $5 black bowtie before the dance so you don't have to pay $25 or whatever the charge is to have it replaced by wherever you rented your tux.

Heh, I didn't go to prom. Didn't have a date (my sister kindly said she would dress up and go with me, but I declined. It was really nice of her though to offer because she was going through a punk stage so she didn't even own a dress nor would have been caught dead in one normally).

No, that is a girdle. A garter is a lacy elastic band that goes on the girl's leg.

I've never heard of the garter as a prom tradition, only a wedding tradition. I did catch the garter at the last wedding I went to.

I think someone's confused "prom" with "wedding". At least, this certainly didn't happen at my prom (that I know of; I certainly didn't do anything of the sort). If so, then that must be an odd tradition that my school totally missed out on. Corsage? Yes. Garter? No.
 
I got a garter when I got my Tuxedo. I gave it to my date before hand, she wore it and then gave it to me. I kept it around my rear view mirror till the end of the year.

garter? i think you're confused, dude. see, you're supposed to buy a corsage for your prom date. then do the nasty, and accidentally knock her up. of course you'll have to marry her. *that's* when the garter comes into play, at the wedding.
 
it all depends on the traditions at your school.

my high school there were no garters. but at my friend's school she was going nuts trying to find all this nice ribbon to accessorize the garter and making it match and all that jazz.

except at that school, the girl gave the guy the garter, which he would wear around one arm for the pictures.

HUGE TIP: GIVE HER A CORSAGE NO MATTER WHAT or she'll hate your guts. she will more than likely get you a boutinere also (well i hope so. i always got my dates one)

hahah it goes on the upper thigh bro, and yes if possible get it 🙂 Unfortunately for me, I am going with a friend (yes it is a girl) but that also means none for Daishan this prom heh.
