So about 4 years ago, I remember waking up in the morning at 10. After eating some rather unhealthy food, I felt this pain on my stomach. It was nothing like I've ever experienced; it was absolutely unbearable and I went to lay down on my bed.

The pain was occurring on the lower right side of my body near the waist. I never wanted to vomit and take a dump so badly at the same time. There was no way to ease the pain and I just curled up in my bed, sweating like a madman and trying to hold out as long as I could. I told my mom I might need to go to the hospital.

6 hours later, after much vomiting and dumps, the pain suddenly eased up. I thought it was a miracle! I was so happy that I didn't have to go to the hospital and that I'm still alive.

So my question is: Was this a case of appendicitis? I seriously felt like it was going to blow at any minute and wanted to kill myself. But I made it out somehow...I never went to the hospital or discussed it with a physician.

Thoughts?

Appendicitis doesn't really occur due to bad food. It sounds like, because you ate some crap, you had severe cramps as your body dealt with it. Appendicitis doesn't tend to go away on its own because it is frequently caused by some sort of blockage (via fecalyth, food, etc). However, it can be caused by infection and the body can sometimes fight infections off. Did you have a crazy fever that went along with it? If not, signs point to not having appendicitis and like I said, appendicitis doesn't typically disappear. Signs of bad food + GI probs point to just a bad reaction.

Like SC said, if it went away on its on after only a few hours and primarily involved gastrointestinal distress, I'm going to hazard a guess that it probably wasn't appendicitis. Most likely you'd just eaten something a bit "off" the day before which, when coupled with what you ate that morning, threw your digestive system into slight disarray.

Then again, I'm not a physician, so I could be entirely incorrect.

pain in the stomach area after eating/drinking is indicative of ulcers... unless it's after eating fatty foods, which is indicative of a biliary issue, like gallstones... it's possible for your gallbladder to get bloated and heavy enough to drop lower than it's supposed to be (behind your liver).

it could also be a diverticulum... i dunno.

appendicitis is usually felt in the belly button area. it'll be tender to the touch. if someone pushes on your belly and takes their fingers away very quickly, it should cause a lot of pain. appendicitis isn't relieved by taking a huge dump. it's an infection that keeps getting worse and eventually ruptures. the rupture causes peritonitis, which is what causes the pain, vomiting, etc. if it goes untreated, you could die.

if i were you, i'd go talk to my primary care doctor.

I had this happen about 6 months before I had my appendix removed but it was like 3 days of pain, vomiting and not being able to stand or lay flat. It never occurred to me at the time it could have been my appendix. The second time it happened, it was MUCH more violent, there was nothing that would take the pain away, until I got morphine at the ER.

eits makes a good point--you may want to see your primary care doc concerning your gallbladder. If your digestive tract is acting up when you eat particularly fatty/greasy foods, it could indeed be indicative of a problem (yay for bile).

Alright thanks y'all for the responses! I'll go check with my doctor next time soon. I would have to say that I was a particularly unhealthy individual back then 🙁
