question about polish jokes

I heard a Polish joke the other day... and I must say, I didn't get it.

How did Polish people get branded with this stereo type? I mean, when did this start? In fact, I dont' think I know if there's a stereo type for Polish people... maybe that's why I don't get the joke.

I've heard more about the polish sausage thing than the stupidity thing. So it took me by suprise when I read that polish joke on Maxim.

I think Poles are anonymous enough that you can call them stupid. Try writing jokes that label Jews or blacks as stupid.

I mean that Poles are thought of as just regular white people. It's kind of like how you can make fun of the Irish for being drunks, although that is partly because they ARE drunks .

One large misperception of the Polish Campaign is the story concerning Polish cavalry charging German tanks. Actually, what happened was more simple and less romantic. Polish cavalry was charging (and defeating) German infantry when some German armored cars showed up. The Polish cavalry, using common sense, withdrew. An Italian war correspondent came upon the scene. The German soldiers, in an effort to build themselves up and downplay the Poles, told him a story about Polish cavalry charging German 'tanks'. The story stuck because the Germans liked it because it built them up. The Poles also liked it because it played on their ego (it played up their bravery). Regardless of the story, The Poles had more sense than to charge tanks. While they didn't have as many tanks, they were aware of their existence and their cavalry's limitations against them.

Basically, an error made by an Italian and used as propaganda by the Germans.
