Yes I do have an update. They ended up sending the mail notifying me of the court date to the wrong address so I missed the court date. On the postcard there was a checkbox for address change which I checked with the correct return address but they sent the mail to a previous address registered with the RMV. No way to argue since they don't keep a copy of the postcard.

Wait a minute. You were actually unaware of the most important date in your young life?

I don't believe you. That's like someone winning the lottery and being unaware of the expiration date by which they could claim their $450 million dollar prize. You were awaiting this day in court like it was the day of your marriage, the birth of your first child, and your retirement day all rolled into one.

The way I understand it is our young Padawan mailed the ticket on time with an address correction on the back but for whatever reason the court date was mailed to his old address, I assume he then got the pay up late bill notice for not paying it. I assume Padawan reached out to the court and found out the date has passed.

Yes I did end up paying the ticket. Thought it was strange I didn't get a court date six weeks after sending the mail. Called up the local courthouse and found I had been found guilty without having the opportunity to defend myself. Asked the DA if we could have a makeup hearing and he declined.

That does seem like a crappy situation though to have the letter get sent to wrong address. Makes you wonder, what happens if someone sues you for millions and puts the address wrong on purpose? Seems like an easy way to get a win.

Seriously though... Is there anything you can do when you know for certain that the officer got it wrong? I've had tickets I deserved, but I've also had two tickets that the officer just completely made up. My parents always told me to grin and bear it. But it's the worst feeling in the world thinking that you must have a tail light out or something and then having him lie and tell you he clocked you going 20 over.

From my past experiences assuming you don't have a ton of fines, you show up and you're respectful the judge immediately dismisses it with a small condition attach like do not get any other violations for 6 or 12 months.

Clueless like usual. If the OP had updated his address with the RMV when he moved, it wouldn't have been an issue. And with your clueless example, the summons needs to be delivered in person.

Man I wish... I went to court for my first ticket. I had been driving an early 90's Ford Ranger that shook like crazy at speeds over 60. Got "clocked" doing 74 in a 55. I was just driving with traffic and there was no way I was going any faster than 60. Plead guilty, no excuse. Judge kept the fine and the points the same. I went to court for one other ticket I got and the judge lowered the fine one step, but kept the points. I've just mailed in the fines for the other 2 I've received.

Court seemed like a huge waste of my time...

Is that worth it if I'm averaging a $100 ticket every three years or so?

I bought mine after getting stopped/warned for the officer's misinterpretation of a law (i.e. I did nothing wrong). I had been thinking about getting one for quite some time, primarily due to other drivers' idiocy. That pushed me over the edge. Since then, I've had a USPS truck run a red light in front of me, a bus lock up / skid, and a few other incidents that remind me how nice it is to have video in the event of a crash.

What is that ticket costing you in extra insurance costs? Of course it's a no brainer to have a dash cam if, and that's a big if, you're actually innocent and the cop is trying to meet quota or get a promotion. I have a feeling that for you that isn't the case and all the camera will prove is your guilt.

Still, it's a tiny investment in peace of mind. Have a dash cam, have proof of what's happened. What if some kid darts in front of you and you clip him? What if some idiot blows a red light or a stop sign? Instead of he-said, she-said you have evidence of who is at fault. If you're a good driver you should want some foolproof method of protecting yourself from other people who are not.

Not sure where you live but I've never had court be a waste of my time (other than once). I've received maybe 4 tickets within California and all four I've gone to court for and had the judge reduce my fine and allow me to take traffic school to keep the points off my record (you can do this once / yr). The only time that court hasn't gone well for me was a ticket going 100 MPH+ where the judge threw the book at me and another guy - giving us heavy fines and a 30 day suspension (although he could have done much much worse).

It was over ten years ago so who knows? I have 2 incidents where I'm sure I was innocent... I mean it could certainly be my own tunnel world view, but I'm 100% certain I was at or under the speed limit in those cases. I also have about 4 where I was caught speeding (2 camera). I don't mind being caught. It's annoying but It's my fault. I mind being reprimanded and fined when I was following the law.

Ill look into a dash cam. Thanks for the advice :)

I'm in Maryland. It could have been my age (pretty young). But I'm pretty respectable and clean up nice. Who knows...

Yes. Or go the even easier route and plead guilty but ask for probation and no points.

Me too. I'm on the road a lot and see a lot of idiot drivers and wanted one just in case, but I never got around to doing it. What got me to buy one ASAP was an incident driving a twisty back road with a cop coming the other way. He wasn't paying attention and had drifted way into my lane coming around a curve. I swerved hard right, he caught it just in time and corrected back, but we missed hitting by inches and the contact would have been in the middle of my lane. And I still probably would have gotten fucked. His dashcam would have had a mysterious malfunction, his buddies investigating would have found that the debris was in his lane proving that I was the one who drifted and it all would have been painted as my fault. Have not been without a dashcam since. They're cheap insurance, better to spend a little and have that money be wasted not needing it than to need one and not have it.

I have one of these but with the GPS logger. I quite like it.
