Question about PhysX (ATI + Geforce PhysX)

In Mirror's Edge, I think it's the 2nd level where you're inside the building and you're getting chased, does it slow down to a crawl (1920x1200, 2AA, PhysX on) when the glass starts shattering?

It goes to around 0-5fps at that part for me with CPU physx.

Now I got the 4870 working with my 8800GT for PhysX (ie. I can choose enable physx in the nV control panel) in WINDOWS XP. However, it still gets to a crawl (5-10fps) at that part but just not as bad as with the CPU. I thought it would be much faster.

Is it that slow even with geforce physx?

UPDATE:
No it's not working even though I can enable Geforce PhysX in the nV control panel.

Is this even supported? I thought you could not mix ATI GPU + NVIDIA GPU for Physx. I have Mirror's Edge but because of my baby, haven't had time to get passed the training level. LOL.

With Windows XP it's possible apparently and supposedly will be with Win7 also.

As I said, I got it so that I can enable geforce physx in the nV control panel but don't know what I can really test it on to see if it works. Cryostasis demo only works on Win Vista/7.

Make sure you have latest 9.09.0121 PhysX drivers properly installed (previous drivers must be cleaned with Driver Sweeper)
And don't forget to apply Mirror's Edge 1.01 patch

Thanks I'll try it out.

calling out to those who brag about phyx all the time must have some hands-on knowledge of it.. maybe they should stop in here

as for me, i'd say give it a shot with a fresh install of both gpu's drivers then try the game again.. good luck and let me know how this goes.. i might retire my 8800gt for secondary duty if i can get me a new 4850 =)

The way you say it suggests the topic should start something like " I swear to tell the truth, nothing but the truth,so help me God"

...and I think you're right also.

You can also try to download the PhysX packs and get the free Warmonger game to test with.
Also, try disabling PhysX in mirrors edge and check your performance difference, if any.

I'm not talking about disabling PhysX in the Nvidia control panel, but in the mirrors edge game options. Let us know if there is any difference.

Technically, it is supposed to be possible to do this under XP, but there is still no guaranty that ATI and Nvidia drivers will play nice together. I personally haven't tried an ATI card as primary and a Nvidia card running PhysX, so I'm sorry I can't help more here.

I agree with keys and check out the fps with physics disabled in game in the parts with the breaking glass. I don't mix brands for my graphics, but I remember people getting ATi cards and nVIDIA cards in the same system but I don't know if the new drivers with PhysX play as nice together.

I can't help more because I could never get PhysX to work on a dedicated card. Only across my SLI and I don't have any problems (Vsync turned on and a constant 60fps) but my monitor is not a gaming monitor (Lenovo L220X w/ S-PVA) and has massive sheering problems.

Yeah it looks like even though I could enable GPU PhysX in the nV control panel...it wasn't doing anything (in XP). Even the "Great Kulu" demo was running very slow...plus from rivatuner, the 8800GT wasn't heating up at all so I'm guessing it isn't working.

Oh well...hopefully it works in Win7 (apparently some people have got it working...I tried but couldn't even in Win7).

Let us know how that goes OP. If more games come out that support Phsyx, I might try to find a cheap NV card and give it a try.

looks like a few people (along with me: 4850+8800gt on winxp) would like to know how to get this working.
its a shame that all those touting physx! physx! won't help us now WHEN WE WANT PHYSX on our systems...

Do a search for "ATI Physx win xp" or something similar in Google. There seems to be some people who have got it working even in Win7 but I haven't had any luck with either XP or Win7. In WinXP I can see the option to enable Geforce PhysX but doesn't seem to do anything when it IS enabled and in Win7 the option doesn't even show up. I'll keep trying but don't have a lot of free time right now. I'm gonna do a clean install of XP in Win7 next week so I'll update if I get anything working.

Im running mirrors edge at 1920 x 1080 on a 8800gt with gpu Phyx enabled and my machine does NOT come to a crawl during that level where the glass starts shattering. I dont have specific benchmarks, and im sure the fps is dropping but it doesnt appear choppy or unplayable.

So yes Physx is working in this game and working well. you guys are trying to do something that is "theoretically supported" and involves mixing display drivers, you cant expect to to work beautifully.

Thanks for confirming...and yes we all know that it might not work...which is why I was testing it and asking for feedback. However, there have been people that have got it to work if you google it.

Rofl what a joke. If you want PhysX in your system, just run PhysX. Your 8800GT fully supports it, like most others who are genuinely interested in PhysX. 🙂

If you're asking for support for a solution that isn't supported, you're better off looking for help from ATI or in this case, Microsoft, since the limitations preventing this from working are more on their end than Nvidia's. 😉
