Question about partitions

Right now I have a system and I want to change partitions from mbr to gpt. I have 2 hds and I assume I can do the backup hd right now and be fine, correct?

Now what is the best way to do my my os hd? I have windows 8 activated on it and I think I would like to do a clean install of windows 8.1. The questions come because I did an upgrade to windows 8 when they had the special around christmas time and came from this version of windows 7 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16832116986

So do I have to install windows 7 again and upgrade again or can I install windows 8 right away? How would you go about this? Thanks

Im just like you, i bought that Win 7 upgrade during the special offer for 14.99 and I have always done a clean install of Windows 8 or now 8.1 without the need for my win 7 key or disc

When you get to the partition wizard, delete all the partitions, then proceed to create new ones, I personally install Windows on my SSD which is a 256 GB SSD so I create a C: Partition of 100 GB and the remaining space goes to the D: Partition

To do this, while you are at the partition wizard screen, press SHIFT + F10 to get the command prompt, then type:

cd\ then hit enter
diskpart then hit enter
select disk 0 then hit enter
clean then hit enter
convert gpt then hit enter

now exit the command prompt and click on REFRESH in the partition wizard screen

You should now only have 1 unpartitioned disk, click on CREATE to create a new partition, if you want 100GB exactly for C:, then enter the following value in the size box: 102936

Make sure you have your product key for Windows 8 written down in a handy spot. A number of programs will reveal your current Windows 8 key if you do not know it. Belarc Advisor for one. You will need the generic install key for Windows 8.1 which is easily found with a google search. Once the correct version of 8.1 is installed, just change the product key to your current 8.0 key and activate.

If you have an iso of 8.1 you should just be able to extract the iso (7-zip) to a usb flash drive and boot/install from that drive.

I believe the upgrade key will work and I would try that first. You shouldn't need RUFUS or anything other than 7-zip. Just extract the iso to the usb flash drive and go. I will admit to not having done a GPT partition install though.

first part u mentioned is correct

2nd part is not

if you copy the ISO to the USB using Rufus it i better because then Rufus will format the USB and make it bootable as a GPT / UEFI partition, which is essential if you want to install Windows 8.1 in UEFI/GPT mode for faster performance and faster boot up

The phrase "I stand corrected" is commonly used to mean that the person recognizes that they were wrong about something. I believe Underclocked used "I sit corrected" as a joke to mean that he/she recognizes the error, but is sitting instead of standing.

Ok got everything up and running on the clean install. Only ran into a few hiccups one being the etron usb 3.0 drivers don't work and the standards ones blow donkey lips. Next problems is intel hd 3000 doesn't appear to have a functioning driver from the one I installed so I might just uninstall and disable in the bios. But the only problem I can't seem to find a solution to is I have a watermark in the lower right of my desktop that says:

Windows 8.1 Pro
SecureBoot isn't configured correctly
Build 9600

Anybody know how to get rid of this?

Thanks again guys.

Well everything was good until I went into the bios to try an get secure boot working. I let the bios load keys for the components and now my board will boot up with what appears to be every diagnostic light on and no power to monitor/keyboar/mice. I have tried to clear my cmos and even tried to do the fake boot failure multiple times in hopes that it would trigger my back up bios. No go from any of that I will link my board in any case you guys can help because it's looking quite like a brick right now. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128498

I tried the cmos clear twice and had it off of power and even held the power button to discharge it. I just am not sure if this somehow corrupted my bios or what is going on.

Since the GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 has a conventional CMOS setup utility (BIOS) rather than having a UEFI setup utility, there isn't any secure boot feature. In the BIOS setup portion of the User Manual, the only related setting that I can find is an option to enable the optical drive to boot in EFI mode. Which settings did you actually change in the CMOS setup utility when you "went into the bios to try an get secure boot working" that caused this? If you have the EFI optical drive boot option set, and then install Windows 8, it will automatically create a GPT and not a MBR.

I'll stand corrected if you've already flashed with Gigabyte's U1L beta BIOS which does enable UEFI. Although I can't find any documentation for the UEFI features that are available in U1L, I'll assume that secure boot settings are present in order to accomodate Windows 8. Is the beta U1L (dated 2013/03/08) UEFI/BIOS the version you're currently running?

And regarding clearing the CMOS: disconnect the PSU power cord from the wall outlet then hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Disconnect all your drives (optical, SSD/HDD, flash) then remove the CMOS battery for five minutes. Reinstall the CMOS battery but don't reconnect any drives at this time. Boot your computer and see if you now have access to the UEFI/BIOS setup utility. Post back with the outcome.

Yeah i'm on the u1l bios and I will try to clear the cmos again today. Who would have thought a setting like this could prevent you from evening getting into your own bios.

So did the cmos battery pull it was out for over twenty minutes and i repeatedly hit the start button to drain power and that didn't do anything. My guess is the main bios became corrupt somehow because I don't even get a gigabyte logo or bios screen when starting the system. Next adventure is try to find a sure fire way to get the backup bios triggered to the main.

Ok I guess I made a little progress as I found my owners manual and located the cmos jumper cables on my mobo. When I do this I get my keyboard and mouse to light up. But the monitor doesn't seem to display anything with a hdmi cable or a dvi cable. I might try another monitor in a bit to see if that changes anything. I also tried the intergrated graphics but that didn't work either. Got the idea from this post here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,13202.0.html

Omg Omg Omg I finally fixed this stupid pos problem. I had to unplug my graphics card from the power supply and plug into integrated and it finally booted into bios. I disabled all secure boot and now I'm back into windows! Thanks guys for helping me out.
