Hello, i have this brand new 200gb maxtor here, and i would like to partition it 20gb for windows and applications/whatever is left over.

i was just wondering because i know that i need to install the maxtor software so that windows will allow the use of all of the drive, but if i partition and install windows and all, will it still work the same, will i be able to get the full capacity.

If you are using WinXP or Win2K you should be able to create a 20gb partition during setup. Once you are in Windows update so that Windows can see the rest of the drive and then format from there.

1) Plug in hard drive
2) Boot up computer with WinXP CD
3) Proceed into Setup
4) Create a 20gb NTFS Partition on the drive
5) Install Windows to that partition
6) Update to SP1a
7) Open up Control Panel
8) Goto Admistrator Tools->Computer Management
9) Click on Disk Management
10) Partition the disk to your liking

I'm not sure I understand your reason for wanting to partition it at all. Don't split it "just because"

Just because...

...it is far, far easier to image a small OS/application partition than it is to image a monstrous 186GB partition (which is what you will have on a 200GB drive, ~186GB of addressable space).

I like how the step by step instructions neglected to have you use the Maxtor software. It's pointless unless you have a very old system that won't recognize the large hard drive.

Thank you for all that responded. I wanted to partiiton because i want to be able to make a fresh install without having to delete all my storage space.

You can do a fresh install without having to completely format a partition.
