Question about Overclocking my 2500+

Just picked up a 2500+ Barton, got a Shuttle AN35N ultra board, it has nF2 chipset. I have heard that my new processor is quite easy to overclock, I was just wondering about what i should expect to get out of it, I am planing on useing the retail heatsink+fan, I will also have 2 case fans inside my computer.

Mainly, I just want to know how much i can overclock it, so as it doesn't decrease the lifespan much, but is still decently faster, also i will be using Artic Silver 3 to mount heatsink to CPU. Any information is welcome.

While many do o/c just fine using the stock cooling, some don't. Guess you'll know soon enough. If you are considering new cooling then check hot deals for the slk900a, it's just 19.99. That's a deal. ;)

As for what you should expect, I'd say at least 11x200. Which makes that under $100 cpu and over $400 cpu. :) You might can do it at default vcore, or it may take 1.7, as mine does. And btw, I am also using an an35n ultra. If no luck then try 11.5x190.

If you think heat is a problem then try running with the side panel off. If that helps then that means you need better case cooling. With stock cooling you'll probably be running in the high 50's or early 60's.

Good luck, and enjoy! :)

It has a fan mounted on side, so i don't think that would make a difference, i might need 2 in the back not one tho, since i plan on having a powerful video card, which might end up running hot.

Copper heatsinks help no matter what type of fan you have, or where it's located, or how many you have. It's the heatsink that absorbs heat from the CPU core... so, the more efficient the heatsink is, the cooler the CPU can be. If the heatsink can't absorb the heat generated, you can put all the fans on it you want, and it won't be as cool as if you were using copper.

you could get anywhere from 1.9ghz to 2.5ghz+
it's hard to say
only way to know is to give it a try

my 2500+ was kinda dissapointing topping out at like 2ghz but many on these forums can get their 2500+ to 2.2ghz (3200+ speeds) on default voltage

have fun

The retail heatsink+fan is fairly decent. You should at least get 2.0GHz out of it, I've gotten 2.1GHz out of mine and others have gotten higher using the retail HSF unit.

I think it also matters how much you have to bump your voltage. If you don't have to bump it or by very little, stock should be fine for the 2.0-2.3GHz range.

As far as the temps go, let stability be your guide ;) All of the guidelines people give about "keep it under 55c" ect, are all moot if the system is stable under extended heavy loads. Certainly the potential lifespan of the CPU might be compromised by running hotter but you will not have that processor in 2yrs anywho so why sweat it?

I wont be setting up for a while tho, since i am waiting till the 9600XT comes out, i will order, and when that comes in i will set up whole ordeal, i do want it to last me at least a year however, so i'll have to see what is fast, but not that decaying on the processor.

If it's stable and you keep the voltage limited to say 1.8v max *which is high for 2.1ghz+ using the retail cooler* then the probability is that longevity won't be an issue for years.

Now will i need pc 3200 ram for this, or should i buy 2700 like i was planing, i think i'm gonna overclock to about 3.1 or so, don't wanna push the processor too much, would 3200 be best bet if i am gonna overclock that much?

Yes, you'll need PC3200 RAM to overclock to 2.1 (you said 3.1, but I assume that's a typo)
