Question about overclocked Durons

I just ordered a Duron 650@1000 from compuwiz1 (Thanks 🙂

and I was just wondering if there was any difference in performance between a Duron 650@1ghz and a Duron 800@1ghz.. If both were unlocked and set to run at 10.0x100?

if its running at 1.85v, how long can i expect it to last? Will it burn out or anything?
 
YES! DIFFERENCE!!!

The 800 costs more for the same performance! That's a pretty BIG difference in my book! 😉

Well, the lifetime will obviously be shortened. However, 1.85v is within the specs, so with good cooling you can expect half the original life. The higher frequency can usually do more damage than the voltage by causing trace migrations which eventually lead to a short. Since all Durons are the same regardless of frequency, optimally the difference from overclocking is minimal. Practially, lower MHz rated chips are not as robust according to the QA tests as high rated chips, so overclocking will cause a failure faster. That is the real difference between a 650 and a 800 @ 1G, given the QA tests are to be trusted.
Either way, it will probably last a couple of years with bad luck (esp with the 800), and by the time it fails, you will be able to but a 1.2G athlon for the same price w/out OC, so why worry? 😉

The common wisdom is, the hotter it runs, the shorter the CPU life. Generally, the more you overclock a chip, the higer the voltage needs to be for it to be stable. The higher the voltage, the more wattage, and heat, the chip sees. The other side of the coin is, the hotter the chip, the less stable it is. This means, if you use a 650 instead of an 800, you may have to up the voltage, and spend the difference in the price of the chips on a better cooling fan. Nobody can tell you how long it will last, but cooler is better and every chip is different.
