Question about over-heating on a non-overclocked machine.

I've just recently picked up a Lian-Li PC68 case with 3 case fans, a Zalman silent cooler, and an Enermax PSU in order to try to keep the temperatures of my system down. I've got a 1.4Ghz T-Bird in a Gigabyte board, and I can't stop them overheating!!

Basically, when the case is closed, and the fans are on (the case to full power, and the Zalman cooler on full), the CPU is reading around 80 celcius in the BIOS. Now, my computer doesn't seem to be performing too badly, like locking up or anything, but the air coming out the back is very warm, and the CPU heatsink is also very hot.

Apart from the CPU, is there anything else that could cause over-heating? I had this problem with my last case, and had to leave the motherboard outside the case for it to work at all!! Looked very funny indeed 🙂

Anyway, if anybody can suggest some ways of keeping it cool, or perhaps reasons why it might be running hot I'll be very grateful.

Is your computer in your sauna?! Okay kidding aside... that sounds awfully hot! I would say your heatsink isnt attached properly but you said it too is very hot... What kind of power supply do you have and when did you buy it, whats its power output? I'd say either your cpu is funked up or your power supply is shot.
 
Sounds like the typical "inaccurate" socket thermistor temp reading. However, did yuo apply a thermal pad or grease to the cpu heatsink?
 
I had been kind of thinking that it was either my motherboard or my CPU as well as they're the only things that have remained constant in the new machine. I'm using a brand new Enermax Whisper 431watt supply, which seems fine. I'll be at a LAN party this weekend so I guess I could try somebody elses CPU to see if that's what's causing the problem.

I did add a bit of thermal grease just before placing the heatsink on it. Is it common for the temperature reading to be wrong??
 
Did you remove the thermal pad that was on the heatsink, if there was one, before applying the grease?

As far as I could see there was none. It was just plain metal, which sat directly on top of the CPU itself. I put the grease in between it though maybe I'll pop some more of it on there.

What heat sink are you using? You should also try to find software that will give you the CPU temp too, just to check against the BIOS reading. I usually leave the sides off of my pc, that drops the temp by a good 5 to 7 degrees C...
