Question about online purchase

Hi Guys

I am buying a product online right now (from an unheard site.)
At checkout it is asking me for the number behind the credit card. (4 digit number)

Is it normal??? Is there any risk in providing this number when i make a purchase???

Just another security feature, that's all, just about every site I've ordered from asked for those digits.

that's just to make sure that the purchaser didn't just find an imprinted card(the thing with carbon copy)

They also use a thing called AVS (address verification)which is to make sure that the transaction is not fraud. It can check if the billing address matches up with what the cc company has the same address. Some companies like Walmart are going to start doing that at the register.

it's through citibank. i just log onto their site and they generate a number that expires in a month but when used applies the payment to my credit card. that way all these online sites can't store my real credit card #.

Thought CVV2 codes are 3 digits. Or maybe AmEx is 4... dumped that a long time ago - stupid annual fee for what?

CVV2 is 4 digits and so is CID

Where can I find it?
The 3-digit code is located on the back of your card, inside the signature area. Typically the signature panel will have a series of numbers, but only the last three digits make up the CVV2 code.

I think AmEx is 4 (and on the front) IIRC
