Question about one scene in the mini-series Roots

There is a scene in the original Roots mini-series, after the slave ship lands in America with Kunta Kinte. The slave sellers took each slave and appeared to put some sort of pink substance on one of their shoulder blades and then cover it with hot tar. After Kinte was sold, the new owner told the seller to take the tar (or the substance or both) off of Kinte.

What was the substance and/or point of that scene?
