Question about OC

I have a question about cpu multipliers and fsb, i am currently overclocking my AMD 64 3500+ and i think i achieved 2.7GHz@11x246 stable with 1.575v the HT (hyper transport) multiplier is at 800mhz (4x), my ram divider (i think its what its called) is at 3:2, (3/2 * 246 = 369mhz ram), now when i set the cpu multiplier to 10, fsb to 270, the HT multiplier to 3x, and the ram divider to 4/3, the system will not boot up to windows it will just reboot before entering windows or will just hang...is this normal or is there something wrong with the system? or am i doing something wrong?

btw i set the 2T command rate to enable for the ram and the timings are set to 3-3-3-8...any advice?

That voltage is a little on the high side to be pushed any further, I'm running a 3200 Venice at 2.6Ghz with 1.45v myself and that's why I say that.

You may have hit the wall with HTT, i.e. 270 is a little too much. Google results for your board and see whether that might be the case. It could be that you have to keep your 11 multiplier and settle for 2.7Ghz with a lower HTT. Also, how good is your PSU? Needs to be a good one to hit the speeds you're after.

To be honest, if the chip needs that much voltage to reach 2.7 it may not be that good of an overclocker. Just my opinion.

ugh..where to start...there are countles ressources on the intarnet regarding A64 overclocking. Btw.i have a A64 3500+ too, early winchester. Goes up to 2607.

The default voltage for winchester is 1.400 to 1.450, i dont know what revision you have, maybe one with 1.5V default...but i would defintly NOT go over 1.6 or so on air cooling...and keep an eye on the temps of your CPU (motherboard monitor, speedfan etc...) you NEED to know what temp it is running. Lower is always better.

I would also (instead of going for higehr FSB and divider) really stay with the 11x246 and instead use NO divider, LOWER to 1T and try to run tighter timings.

If you go 246 1:1 on the ram with 1T and maybe CAS2 this would be very good already, especially for value ram..hmm..maybe youneed 2T for the 3 gigs.

Anyway..you should also not "think" thatit is stable at 2.7 (which would be VERY good!) but instead test with prime95 or, better, OCCT

I only can recommend some basic A64 overclocking guides and go from there, its just too much Look around, here or on google.

Good point, perhaps his voltage hasn't been increased by as much as I thought.

Agree with you on not going above 1.6v on air as well.

My Venice hits 2750 @ 1.475V. In the A64 Overclocking Stickie it was recommended to stay below 1.5V. Try lowering your voltage by a notch and each time run Prime95/Stress Prime to verify correct operation.

Lower your divider to 100mhz, lower your cpu multi down to like 9, then I would lower your HT mutliplier down to 3, or also known as 600mhz. On your board, does it have a southbridge multiplier as well? if it does lower that to 600mhz as well. then keep pushing your htt up as far as you can go. Just a start, def. read some oc guides.

11 x 246 = 2706 We're OK here.

stable with 1.575v ...riskey, What temps? Stay below 55 if you can.

No... 246 x 4 = 984 Wrong, but anything between 800 and 1200 will boot.

No... thats 2:3 (166/200), so 166/200 x 246 = 204.16mhz

now when i set the cpu multiplier to 10, fsb to 270, the HT multiplier to 3x, and the ram divider to 4/3, the system will not boot up to windows
270 X 10 = 2700...OK
270 x 3 = 810 HT...prolly too low
270 x 150/200 (3:4) = 202.5mhz...should be OK

With three sticks OCing is problematic at best. You will nees the 2T command rate abd the memory probably will not run over DDR333 (166mhz), and timings will be goofy because there are probably different speed timings on the different sticks. Use two identical sticks only, and your life will become significantly happier.
