Renault has owned a minority controlling stake in Nissan since early 1999 (I believe Renault owns 45% of Nissan, and Nissan owns 15% of Renault), and are pretty much responsible for the company's turnaround. If you are familiar at all with Renault design, you can really see it in alot of Nissan's new products, the Murano standing out as a glaring example.

If that's true, I could see why Top Gear thinks of it as French.

Renault owns 44.4% of Nissan, and Nissan owns 15% of Renault. Both companies remain separate but Renault's equity essentially gives it the power to control the way run Nissan is run.
