Entry level help-desk...
Volunteer-or-part/time work on a local college network...

Be creative, there are hundreds of ways to get experience...

Once you are "in the system"-people know other people who may have a position for you to move into--this is called Networking(with people).

DO NOT expect to be a System Admin straight off the block... Not gunna happen... Work your way up, you will be much better for it...

Some people take the crap path there. I actually did tech support and software/hardware testing before I ever became an IS manager. Some people refer to it as "paying your dues". I call it doing a grunt job so you can learn and move on to bigger and better things.

Yeah, you gotta put in your time first. Plus hopefully you'll be exposed to alot of different areas of modern IT giving you a chance to truly figure out what you want to do. CERTs don't mean jack unless you have actually worked on the stuff for a few years. Hell, I don't even put mine on my resume anymore. They make me seem cheap. But for an entry level position it helps get your foot in the door.

cheers

I have gotten lucky (kinda) and gotten a Network Admin position right off the block but I am paid poorly so I'm still putting in my time. I have the oppurtunity to have MANY more responsibilities than I would have in a lower position and my boss thrives on doing his own training. He likes to teach the real world way of doing things.

Anyway, good luck.

P.S. I am working on a myrid list of certifications and the nice thing is that once you're working in the field the company you're working for may pick up the tab for certs if you pass them. They add up to a bit of money.

Or, just apply anyway. Sometimes if they are desperate and the unexperienced employee seems pretty sharp, they'll hire you anyway.

Take the "low-pay plunge". Years ago I settled for slightly over 30k just out of college with TCom Mgmt BS. Took entry level admin/tech position and glad to say salary has gone up with the years of experience. Great place to start is in the help desk or PC Tech position. Plenty to learn there.
Good luck
