question about MX records

dabuddha

Lifer
Wasn't sure if this was the right forums to post this in but here goes.

I have a domain registered with godaddy.com
I've got a hosting account with wowguilds.ca
I have the nameservers set to rackspace.com (which is used by wowguilds.ca)
I want to setup email accounts using my own server (which I have with hostpc and I have a control panel).
I called up godaddy because I was unable to modify MX records for my domain hosted at wowguilds.ca
He told me that I have to add the MX record with rackspace.com (which I don't have an account with).

All this sorta confused me. I'm not sure where I need to make the change at this point. Would it be better to have my domain hosted with my hostpc account and have it redirect to wowguilds? Or is there something simpler I can do.

TIA!

So it sounds like you don't have access to any control panel @ wowguilds? If so then I would just contact them and ask if you can have some MX records added to your domain.

If *you* want control over your domain records then the easiest now would be through your hostpc control panel. You would need to set your NS records at godaddy.com to point to the hostpc nameservers instead of the rackspace/wowguilds ones and make sure you copy over all relevant records.

Because wowguilds/rackspace is your domain's authoritative DNS server (as per your setting in godaddy), any changes to DNS records would need to be made with them.

If they do not allow you to make changes on that level, you'll need to change your authoritative DNS server. If you can get the settings you need to make your wowguilds stuff work properly, you can move that DNS server to anyone else at the registrar level, and make whatever other changes you need.

Yes, the registrar and place that hosts DNS servers are completely unrelated, although the two are usually bundled together for convenience. How did you get rackspace to answer any queries for the domain if you don't have an account with them?

I guess wowguilds.ca is just a ISP reseller and work with rackspace. This relationship usually means that they usually do not allow direct modification of some records.

Sometimes you have to call the reseller to made the modification.

I have dealt with some resellers that do not even know what a DNS is.

I'm assuming that wowguilds uses rackspace which is why wowguilds had me set the dns servers to rackspace when I setup an account with them. I'll contact wowguilds and see if they can add a mx record.
