Question about military "code"

I dont know what else to call it. Help me out here. What is it called, when relaying letters over a radio, when a letter is substituted with a word. Such as Alpha, Zulu, Omega, etc. What is this "code" and where does it come from?

It's referred to as the "phonetic alphabet" and is used to avoid confusion in letters. "Delta" and "Bravo" are a lot harder to confuse than "d" and "b."

NATO phonetic alphabet

A=Alpha
B=Bravo
C=Charlie
D=Delta
E=Echo
F=Foxtrot
G=Golf
H=Hotel
I=India
J=Juliet
K=Kilo
L=Lima
M=Mike
N=November
O=Oscar
P=Papa
Q=Quebec
R=Romeo
S=Sierra
T=Tango
U=Uniform
V=Victor
W=Whiskey
X=X-ray
Y=Yankee
Z=Zulu

There are, but the above list is the current US Army standard.
