Question about military branches

Are they entirely seperate or do the lower ranks have to take orders from the higher ranking officers regardless of branch? Or can the lower rank in another branch tell higher officers to fuck off? And is there a ranking between the branches? Like you have four Captains in one room, one from each branch, does any one have higher standing than another? If need be, who is supposed to take charge of a room or situation?

and is there a reason there is no war time general for the marines like all the other branches?

The ranks work regardless of branch, but they don't generally associate with each other. Completely seperate bases and missions, they just don't see each other.

Marines are a part of the Navy.

Oh in the case of a room full of captains, one person is always designated the leader if they are working together. Also sometimes there is a person of the same rank that is still higher up, like the Command Chief on an Air Force Base.

WTF is a war time general? The Marine Corps does have a General who serves as the HMFIC. He is referred to as the Commandant of the Marine Corps. He is a a 4 star General.

And the Marine Corps is a Department of the Navy.

(It's the Mens Department. 😛 )

usually if you have 2 people of equal rank, the one with the most "time in grade" is the senior ranking person. i.e. 2 sergeants. one has been a sergeant for 6 months, the other 18months. The 18month sergeant is the senior one.

captain is a bad example because a captain in the navy is an O-6 grade where a captain in the other branches is an O-3 grade

In a room full of Captains, the Navy Captain is the ranking officer.

edit: FoBoT beat me to it...

why is sergeant not listed in those ranks? Because they are not "officially" officers?

EDIT: nevermind, officers vs. enlisted

As for taking orders, do you even have to follow orders from those not in your chain of command, even if you're in the same branch?

Yes. If someone of higher rank gives you an order you are expected to obey and execute.

I'm an active duty Army officer, and that's just not true. I could see someone wearing a backwards baseball cap in uniform and correct them, and if they didn't want to listen to me, my options are extremely limited. Basically try to figure out what unit they're with (can be nearly impossible with division level arm patches) and contact their chain of command.

Basically outside your chain of command, in garrison, it's more of a courtesy to obey superior NCO's and Officers.

Not in Iraq/Afghanistan. Everyone is mixed together.

The marines don't have a 5 star general position, such as Army, Navy, and Air Force have, during times of conflict (sometimes, there isn't one right now). I don't know why the Marines don't, probably because they fall under the Navy.

You generally don't give orders to those outside of your chain of command. If you wanted someone to do something in the Navy and you're in the Army, you'd ask that Navy individual's commander who would then give the order. Chain of command has two purposes, one obviously being that higher ranking members give orders to lower ranking individuals, but also, lower ranks only report to and take orders from a few higher ranking individuals. This second part is important, otherwise you'd have chaos - with everyone throwing orders around everywhere, you'd have a case of too many chiefs and no indians.

Technically, (IIRC) the Navy Captain outranks the captains in all other branches.

The USMC has a commandant. Currently he is USMC General James T. Conway.

As of March 2009, the General staff of the USMC consists of:

0-10 General – 4
0-9 Lt General – 16
0-8 Major general – 23
0-7 – Brig General – 40

(I see I've been beaten to the Captain comparison)

5 star is a war only rank

One branch may be more restrictive than another when it comes to uniform appearances.

However a ranking officer when seeing an infraction should rectify. Whether it be due to improper wearing of the uniform or sexual misconduct.

As the saying goes. "A officer who does not enforce a standard has set a new one."

Separate.

Marines fell under Navy, I think, so war time general didn't apply.
Marines are paid by the Dept of the Navy and sometimes are assigned to Navy commands. Its respectful to listen to a officer from another branch, but that doesnt mean do what they say. Just report to your division commander that some crack head officer is trying to tell you what to do. He will almost 100% of the time to dont pay any attention to that dumass. In those words..

5 stars are normally only appointed only in war time.
