Question about microphones and macs

Not really sure if this is the right forum but mods feel free to move it if I'm in the wrong place. Just let me know where you put it.

I've got a regular 1/8 inch mic and I'm trying to record my acoustic guitar in Garageband. Yes, I know this is totally ghetto, but I don't want to put a pickup into my acoustic and I don't want to shell out the dough for a nice condenser mic.

I thought my headset mic would work just fine but it didn't, so I went out and bought this new mic from Best Buy and only after I opened it did I realize it said PC Desktop Mic. Should've just spent the extra 10 bucks on a USB mic, but hindsight is always 20/20.

My question is, did I just waste $20 or is there a way I can get this mic to work? The computer isn't picking up anything.

I don't see why it shouldn't work. You plugged the 1/8 inch jack for the mic into the correct spot on the computer, right?

Yes. It works when I plug my amp into this jack, I double-checked thinking I might have put it into the wrong one.

It will work, sure, but a better mic will make a world of difference
