Question about merger

going to be immediate or are they going to take awhile. I'm planning on building an AM2 system this X-Mas and I was wondering if I should consider an ATI chipset instead of an Nvidia chipset.

If you are building this X-Mas then there is pretty much no reason to not get Core 2. I have an AMD system with a nVidia NF 570 chipset and I love it, but the fact is that you can have a faster Conroe system for the same $$ as a slower AM2 system, so why even bother with AM2 right now?

AMD motherboards are a heck of a lot cheaper than Intel's, and the AM2 upgrade path is more definite (Intel hasn't said anything about a successor to LGA775, yet AMD has already said that AM3 will be backwards-compatible).

1) Myth. 945 Conroe Boards start at $60. 965's start at $100.

2) Quad-Core Kentsfiend is confirmed to work on 965 and above 775 boards. So thats another year.

My question is are the effects of the merger going to happen immediately or later like in '08? I'm trying to decide which video card and mobo to get.

Not possible to happen immediately.

Stuff takes years to engineer out. When nvidia bought 3dfx (another graphics company), it took them 2 years to use any 3dfx thing into their products.
