question about memory thing.

Some time ago I used to do something like turn of page file memory or something like that, not sure what it was, but i think it had something ot do with turning of the thing that the os uses to write memory to the HD instead of the RAM itself, or something like this, andit was suppose to improve memory. I am not sure what it was called. What is this called?

Does it improve performance? By how much?

I have 512 mb of RAM, and at most times, I have 320 mb of it free. I do not usually run memory intnsive applications like photoshop and all that. I dont play games a lot.

Any suggestions?

Are there any sites that have benchmarked XP AND 2000, using different amounts of memory?

Example...
XP @ 512MB, 1GB, 1.5GB, 2GB
2000 @ 512MB, 1GB, 1.5GB, 2GB
